Referee assault case adjourned to May 29

Two men charged after a referee was attacked at a youth hockey tournament in Lethbridge last year won’t return to court until later this spring.
The matter for Robert Farrell Creighton and Todd William Cross Child was in Lethbridge provincial court Friday, but adjourned to May 29.
Lethbridge lawyer Miranda Hlady had hoped to plead not guilty to a single charge of assault on behalf of Creighton, but the co-accused’s lawyer was not in court to enter a plea, and the Crown said it still needed to determine whether it would proceed by summary conviction or indictment, the more serious procedure.
The two men were charged in relation to a three-on-three tournament Sept. 15, during which, reported police, a player got into a verbal spat with a referee. The youth struck the official twice with his stick and the referee pushed the player to the ice.
A group of coaches and a relative of the player then walked onto the ice, where a coach from the opposing team was shoved down and the ref was punched multiple times by two men before the altercation ended.
Cross Child faces two counts of assault in relation to the incident.
