Support organ donation through Green Shirt Day today

Today marks the second annual Green Shirt Day in support of organ donor awareness across Canada.

The day was established by Toby and Bernardine Boulet, whose son Logan tragically lost his life along with 15 others in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash two years ago.

However, one of the huge positives to emerge from the tragedy was Logan’s desire to be an organ donor, which he signed up to do prior to the crash. Because of his decision, Logan’s organs were donated to six people who were awaiting transplants.

Logan was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt, who passed away in June 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved six lives.

More importantly, Logan’s decision sparked a groundswell of people across Canada signing up to become organ donors, aptly named “The Logan Boulet Effect.”

The Boulets then established Green Shirt Day on April 7 and all Canadians are urged to wear green on that day.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people will not be allowed to gather in groups and show their support for Green Shirt Day.

Instead, people are urged to show their support through social media, on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and post a picture of yourself in a green shirt to promote organ donor awareness.

Toby Boulet said the key to increased organ donations is “the absolute need to talk to your family and let them know what it is you want them to do when you pass.

“Let them know clearly and concisely what it is you want. Treat your decision to become an organ donor the same as your ‘last will and testament.'”
