All-star nods for Canes’ trio

Three members of the Lethbridge Hurricanes earned all-star recognition as the Western Hockey League announced its year-end all-star rosters Tuesday.

Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison were named ot he WHL Eastern Conference first all-star team, and defenceman Alex Cotton earned a spot on the second all-star team.

Cozens ranked second in Eastern Conference scoring and seventh in league scoring with 85 points (38 goals, 47 assists) in 51 games. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound product of Whitehorse, Yukon was tied for the league lead in short-handed goals with four and recorded five four-point games as part of 23 multi-point efforts throughout 2019-20.

A prospect of the Buffalo Sabres, the 19-year-old Cozens has recorded 223 points (95G-128A) in 179 WHL regular season games.

Addison ranked third in scoring among defencemen in the WHL’s Eastern Conference with 52 points (10 goals, 42 assists) in 50 games. Chosen second overall at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, the Minnesota Wild prospect has accrued 215 points (41G-174A) in 252 WHL regular season games.

Aliaksei Protas of the Prince Albert Raiders and James Hamblin of the Medicine Hat Tigers were other first all-star team forwards, Braden Schneider of the Brandon Wheat Kings was the other blue-liner, and Jiri Patera of the Brandon Wheat Kings was Eastern Conference first-team all-star goaltender.

Named to the Western Conference first all-star team were goaltender Dustin Wolf of the Everett Silvertips, defencemen Johnny Ludvig of the Portland Winterhawks and Ty Smith of the Spokane Chiefs, and forwards Adam Beckman of Spokane, Seth Jarvis of Portland and Connor Zary of the Kamloops Blazers.

Cotton was the leading scorer among all WHL defencemen with 67 points (20 goals, 47 assists) in 63 games. The 18-year-old from Langley, B.C., was second among WHL defencemen in assists.

A fifth-round pick (99th) of the Hurricanes in the 2016 WHL bantam draft, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Cotton established career highs in all major offensive categories during 2019-20 and is eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft.

Joining Cotton on the Eastern Conference second all-star team were goaltender Max Paddock of the Prince Albert Raiders, defenceman Matthew Robertson of the Edmonton Oil Kings, and forwards Mark Kastelic of the Calgary Hitmen, Peyton Krebs of the Winnipeg Ice, and Riley Sawchuk of the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Western Conference second-team all-stars included goaltender Joel Hofer of the Portland Winterhawks, defencemen Bowen Byram of the Vancouver Giants and Jake Christiansen of the Everett Silvertips, and forwards Zane Franklin of the Kamloops Blazers (a former Lethbridge Hurricane), Bryce Kindoppof the Everett Silvertips, and Eli Zummack of the Spokane Chiefs.
