Crown opposes bail for man facing numerous charges

A 36-year-old Calgary man who faces numerous criminal offences following his arrest in Lethbridge Wednesday, hopes he’ll be released from custody when he returns to court for a bail hearing later this month.
The Crown, however, wants to keep him in.
Michael Newman Davies appeared in Lethbridge provincial court Thursday, where duty counsel lawyer Brett Carlson explained he hadn’t received any instructions from the accused’s anticipated lawyer and could only adjourn the matter. He noted, however, the Crown is opposed to Davies’ release.
Davies is charged with knowingly possessing an unauthorized firearm, failing to comply with release order conditions, unauthorized possession of a firearm/weapon in vehicle, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of a firearm/weapon obtained by an offence, drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking in property or proceeds over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, attempted obstruction of justice, resisting a peace officer and careless use/storage of a firearm.
Police reported that at about 8 a.m. Wednesday a citizen noted a suspicious vehicle parked in the 1400 block of 14 Street North. The vehicle was idling and the driver was sitting behind the steering wheel, but he was asleep.
Police woke the driver, who initially provided a false name, but police were able to correctly identify him and determined he was breaching conditions of a house arrest in Calgary.
The man attempted to flee, but was caught and arrested following a brief foot chase. Police searched him and seized nearly 990 grams of methamphetamine, 437 grams of cocaine and nearly 47 grams of carfentanil. A loaded .44-calibre revolver that had been stolen out of Stettler was also found, along with ammunition, two knives, nearly $19,000 in cash and a locked safe. The street value of the drugs is nearly $136,000.
Davies was remanded following a judicial interim release hearing, and appeared in court by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre. He is expected to appear in court by closed-circuit TV April 30, ostensibly for a bail hearing.
