Man pleads guilty to possession of stolen property

There’s nothing quite like camping lakeside among trees on a warm, summer day.
That’s what Robert Michael McKay was doing in June 2018 when RCMP approached him while he was at Park Lake Provincial Park. McKay was camping in a nice fifth wheel trailer, that he had towed to the camping site in a nice Ford F350. The problem is, the trailer and truck had been stolen from Calgary a couple of weeks earlier.
Police were alerted June 26 when an employee with the Town of Coalhurst reported McKay and the two stolen vehicles were at the town’s campground. When officers arrived, McKay had already left, but they learned later he had gone to Park Lake.
He was still at the park when police approached him June 28, and a check of the vehicles’ serial numbers confirmed the truck and trailer had been stolen. Police searched McKay and the vehicles and found various cards, including credit cards, that had also been stolen from vehicles during incidents of car prowling.
McKay, 44, pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to four counts of possession of stolen property and was sentenced to six months in jail. The Crown noted McKay has a lengthy criminal record, which includes convictions primarily for property and fraud-related crimes.
Although McKay received a jail sentence of six months, he was given credit for the equivalent of 95 days he has already spent in custody, leaving him with just under three months to serve.
