Canes shore up defence in trade with Royals

The Lethbridge Hurricanes acquired 2000-born defenceman Mitchell Prowse, along with an eighth-round draft pick in the 2022 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft and a conditional seventh-round pick in 2022 from the Victoria Royals on Friday in exchange for 2002-born forward Nick Dorrington, a seventh-round pick in 2020 and a fourth-round pick in 2021.

Prowse, 19, was originally selected by the Royals in the second round (35th overall) in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. The product of Kelowna, B.C., skated in 64 games during the shortened 2019-20 season with Victoria totalling a career-high 33 points, including three goals and 30 assists, along with 76 penalty minutes.

The six-foot-two, 200-pound lefthand shot defenceman has appeared in 239 regular season games in the WHL, all with the Royals, totalling 81 points (9g-72a) along with 200 penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating. Prowse has played in 23 post-season games collecting eight points (1g-7a) along with six penalty minutes.

“We are really excited to add Prowse to our group for next season,” said Hurricanes general manager Peter Anholt in a release. “We needed to add to our defence for next year with the departures of Ty Prefontaine, Koletrane Wilson and Calen Addison, and we feel this is a strong add and an important piece for us.”

Prowse, who joins fellow former Royal Dino Kambeitz and Oliver Okuliar as the three overage players on the Hurricanes roster for the 2020-21 season, was named Victoria’s Top Defenceman in 2019-20 as he led the Royals in points by blue-liner, totalling 17 more points than the second-highest scoring rearguard.

Dorrington, 18, appeared in 36 games in his rookie season with the Hurricanes in 2019-20 totaling two points (1g-1a) along with 18 penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating. The Langley, B.C., product was undrafted in the WHL Bantam Draft before being listed and signed by the Canes in 2018.

“We’d like to thank Nick for all his hard work and dedication to being a Hurricane,” added Anholt. “We wish him nothing but the best moving forward in Victoria.”
