The Lethbridge firefighter department was busy Tuesday afternoon as a wildfire burned a portion of the city’s river valley around the Elizabeth Hall Wetlands.
Firefighters received assistance from a water-dropping helicopter, part of a resource sharing partnership with Alberta Forestry and Agriculture, as the tight spaces among the terrain of the river valley cottonwood forest made vehicle access a challenge.
Workers from the neighbouring Tollestrup Construction site were said to be quick on the scene as they offering a water tanker truck and a bulldozer on standby if needed. Crews were also called in from at least one neighbouring fire department.
Lethbridge fire continued to remain on the scene to deal with hotspots and to keep the fire from spreading further.
Officials said they were in the preliminary stages of the investigation and no cause has yet been made available.
