A 36-year-old man who pleaded guilty to several criminal offences he committed earlier this year appeared to take a 90-day jail sentence in stride.
Grant Tyler Williams even apologized to the judge and wished him good health.
“I take full responsibility for all my actions,” Williams said Friday in Lethbridge provincial court, then added he was remorseful and hoped everyone would remain safe during the coronovirus pandemic.
Williams, who appeared in court by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, pleaded guilty to charges of assault, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and failure to comply with conditions of probation and release orders.
Court was told Williams was at a residence in Fort Macleod Jan. 8 when he got into an argument with several others. During the altercation he struck another man in the face. A month later he saw the same man walking along 5 Avenue South in Lethbridge, approached him and punched him in the mouth. At the time Williams had been prohibited from having any contact with his victim.
Williams was in trouble again Feb. 16 when a Lethbridge police officer saw Williams driving a stolen pickup truck. The truck’s owner had left the vehicle parked at a city pub, intending to pick it up the following day, but when he arrived, his truck was gone.
Crown prosecutor Dawn Janecke explained the owner had taken a taxi home from the pub, but had locked the doors to his truck. There were, however, an extra set of keys inside.
Police found the truck parked a few blocks away from where Williams was seen driving it. They also saw the suspect walking away from the vehicle and he was apprehended.
Although sentenced to 90 days in jail, Williams was credited for the equivalent of 96 days he had already spent in custody. However, he remains in custody on other charges, including break and enter, theft and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He returns to court on those and other charges Thursday.
