Coulee Clean Up postponed

The Helen Schuler Nature Centre has postponed the 2020 Coulee Clean Up, due to health concerns related to COVID-19. The centre made the decision after following advice from federal and provincial public health groups.

“It was a pretty easy decision on our part, just following the guidelines that are coming down from the provincial medical officers,” said Coreen Putman, co-ordinator for the centre, in a release. “Our primary concern is always people’s safety.”

The centre is encouraging volunteers to sign up for the Natural Leaders Project: Home Eco Challenge, which is a free online series designed to help encourage environmental learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Home Eco Challenge essentially explores all of the same themes and topics but allows people to do that either in the comfort of their own home, or if they’re able to, from maybe their yard,” said Putman.

Each week participants will receive worksheets and videos about topics such as exploring your backyard, ecosystems and recycling.

“It really helps people to learn about their home and their yard and their neighbourhood from an ecosystem perspective,” she said.

The centre also encourages people to send in photos of any environmental stewardship projects they are working on.
