Elmer Baczuk

1931 – 2020

Mr. Elmer Baczuk of Lethbridge passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, April 26 at the age of 88 years.

Elmer was most affectionately known to his friends as Fudd, and endearingly known as Papa Bear in his later years. He was very charismatic, engaging and had an amazing sense of humor, all of which contributed to his long and successful career as a salesman.

Born in Coaldale on May 15, 1931 to John Baczuk and Mary Baczuk (Istok). He attended school until grade 8, and though his formal education wasn’t extensive, he had a head for numbers and his handwriting was quite elegant. Like most kids back in that generation, he quit school to help his family and worked full time on the farm.

By his late teens, he worked as a section man for CPR, repairing the tracks until one day his brother Bill drove up in a Canada Dry Truck and recruited him to work for them as well. This was the beginning of his career of 50 years in sales. Then Enerson’s, Ponderosa Auto and RV, and lastly Travelcraft Trailers, from where he retired in his 70’s.

As a young man, Elmer’s passions were fishing, camping, cars (65 GTO), Norton 650 Commando and Harley Davidson motorcycles, boating and waterskiing with his 2 brothers and Al Schneider at Okanagan Lake and Christina Lake in BC. Other special places he travelled and fell in love with were; Vancouver Island, Victoria, Qualicum Beach and Bouchart Gardens.

He would spend hours in his flower planters, garden and yard, taking great pride in his lawn being golf green perfect. Elmer had a huge love for animals, especially his German Shepherd Gentle Ben and Jennifer’s cat Boomer. In true Hungarian fashion, he loved to cook and equally enjoyed food.

His twilight years were spent in West Highlands Good Sams where he was incredibly well cared for and loved by their amazing staff. He lived to ride his 3 wheeled Schwinn bike daily around the lake outside his facility, greeting every dog with much adoration and every person with a kind word or flattery. He spent hours watching and cheering on his favorite curling teams, as well as the Edmonton Oilers and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Elmer lived life to it’s fullest and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Elmer is survived by his children Diane (Dennis) Housely; Shelly (Todd) Dallyn; Sheila Standish; Jennifer (Kevin Matson) Baczuk; grandchildren Julia (Justin) Standish, Leslie (Greg) Nachtegaele, Bob (Alexis) Housely; great-granchildren Corbin, Mason, Reid, Mercedes and Seth.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Baczuk and Mary Baczuk (Istok); brothers, John Baczuk and Bill Baczuk.

As per Elmer’s wishes, he will be remembered privately by his family and friends.

Margaret Ann Brown beloved wife of Darl Brown passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at the age of 69 years.

Margaret was born in Coaldale on September 2, 1950, to her parents John and Anna Funk. She was raised on her family’s farm near Coaldale. As a young girl, she came to faith in Christ for salvation, a faith from which she never wavered. After completion of High School, she attended Bethany Bible Institute and upon graduation began working as a secretary at Lethbridge Community College. It was there that she met her husband Darl who was teaching there and they were married in 1975. They moved to his farm just 7 miles down the road from where she was raised and have resided there for the last 44 years. After 4 years of marriage, they were blessed by the birth of their son Glen and 2 years later by that of their daughter Sheri. When the children were born, Margaret left her job at the college to become a full-time mom, her true calling in life. Operation Christmas Child was a charity close to her heart as she packed many boxes of Christmas gifts each year for needy children around the world. She spent her life in service to her family, friends, church and strangers. The farm yard was always full of lights especially at Christmas. Her many flower gardens were beautiful. She made our house a home. She had a creative gift and talent for writing which she used to compose many poems and create handmade cards for birthdays, anniversaries, bereavements etc. and with the advent of personal computers excelled in digital scrapbooking. When Darl retired they took up the RV lifestyle and were blessed to have spent the last 12 winters in south Texas and travelling extensively throughout the US and Canada. Deep and lasting friendships were formed during this time with their many friends in Texas.

We all felt she had to leave much too soon but our times are in God’s hands not ours. She was predeceased by her parents John & Anna Funk, sister Elsie, and her in-laws Andrew & Verna Brown.

Due to the restrictions regarding the Covid-19 virus, a Private Family Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 with Interment in the Coaldale Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be announced at a future date.

May 26, 1936 – April 28, 2020

HANNAH ARLENE FLICKINGER – Sadly, we are sharing the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Hannah Arlene Flickinger (Valgardson), beloved wife of Edwin Flickinger of 64 years, in Cardston, AB. Tuesday April 28, 2020 at the age of 83 years. The family will have a private service in her honour.

Left to carry on her legacy are her loving children Terrilyn (Colin) Nelson of Cardston, Gerald (Kim) Flickinger of Cardston, Deborah (Brad) Graves of Athol, Idaho, Michael (April) Flickinger of Nephi, Utah and Bradley (Monique) Flickinger Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Also left to mourn are 22 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Arlene was predeceased by one grandchild.

Arlene was a strong, loving person with a vibrant personality that would light up a room. She had a way of pulling you in with her quick wit and smile that instantly welcomed everyone she met. She was confident and independent. She loved her family fiercely and also her Heavenly Father and Saviour. Arlene served in many capacities throughout her life, each calling she held, and each person she served has been blessed with her commitment to always do her best.

Arlene took great comfort in her family, and the life she and Ed worked so hard to build. A life well lived, a life well loved.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, there will be a Private Graveside Service. When it is safe we will have a gathering for our family and friends to celebrate Arlene.

O’SHEA

“I have fought the good fight,

I have finished the race,

I have kept the faith.”

After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, our cherished dad, granddad and great-granddad, NEAL ALVIN O’SHEA, bravely ran his race to the finish. On Monday, April 27, 2020, Dad peacefully left us to be reunited with his beloved Louise, wife of 63 years.

Left in the trail of his love are his three children: son, Michael (Marie) O’Shea of Spruce Grove and daughters, Maureen (Alastair) Furtado of Lethbridge and Kellie (David) Wirzba of Coalhurst; grandchildren: Kealey Scott, Meagan Deck (Craig), Kevin Reimer (Ashley), Mandy Reimer (Sheldon), Ryan Furtado, Kat Furtado (Sarah), Bryce Wirzba, Brayden Wirzba (Eden) and Avril Wirzba as well as 13 great-grandchildren. Dad also leaves his four wonderful sisters: Mary Ellen Gangur of Lethbridge, Lily McCabe of Vancouver, BC, Patsy (Reg) Letendre of Penticton, BC and Colleen O’Shea of Red Deer.

Mom predeceased Dad on July 17, 2019. With peace, we know they are together again.

Dad was born into a progressive and industrious Mayerthorpe, AB farm family in 1935. He married his sweetheart, Louise, in 1956, thus beginning their life together. He was a Journeyman Electrician by trade, and spent his early work years in the Alberta oil patch. In 1968, Dad moved our family up north, becoming the pioneers of a new Alberta oil town called “Rainbow Lake”. In 1972, Dad left the oil patch and moved his family to Lethbridge, where he worked as an Electrician, maintenance man and became a very successful businessman. His first business venture was “Allen’s Lakeshore Motel” in Waterton Lakes National Park in the mid-70s. Dad then went on to own and operate the “A & W” in Fort MacLeod, the “Sub Stop” in Medicine Hat, the “Sub Shop” in the Lethbridge Centre, the cafeteria in the Lethbridge Courthouse and finally King Koin Laundry. You could also find Dad playing “Santa” at the Lethbridge Centre in the 1990s.

Dad and Mom were very involved with Victory Church as well as their seniors’ group. Dad served as an usher and embraced this responsibility for over 30 years. Dad was also involved in the beginning stages and financial support of Streets Alive. He was very committed to helping others.

Since a boy, Dad had a love for music and baseball. His love for the New York Yankees, Babe Ruth and later, the Toronto Blue Jays brought conversation to family gatherings. Even during his latter years with dementia, you could find Dad singing to the piano tune of Danny Boy, Irish Lullaby, My Wild Irish Rose and If You Were the Only Girl in the World. Dad also took up yodelling which made for much amusement. Dad and Mom spent many weekends embraced in a song; what magic it was to watch them dance.

In their latter years, Dad and Mom enjoyed their retirement with camping in their motorhome, walking to Timmies for a coffee, taking one last cruise to Alaska and relaxing in their favorite home away from home, Hawaii.

We want to thank the HCAs and staff at Blue Sky Lodge, St. Therese Villa, and St. Michael’s “H” House for their care over the last ten years. Thank you also to Dr. Timothy Collins for his years of care for Dad.

When a life is well-lived and blessed, those memories become a treasure. Our treasures are many and will carry us until we meet again…we love and miss you Dad.

RASMUSSEN

MAUREEN ELIZABETH WILKINSON RASMUSSEN, beloved wife of the late Robert Rasmussen, passed away in Raymond on April 29, 2020 at the age of 82.

Maureen was born on May 14, 1937, in Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire, England. She met Robert while he was serving a mission in England, and in 1957, immigrated to Canada to marry him. Together they settled on the family farm near Magrath where they raised five children. Maureen was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different capacities over the years. She and Robert spent many years serving as temple workers, only taking a break to serve a mission in Virginia. She worked for many years as an Educational Assistant in the Magrath schools, and she cared deeply for the students and their families. She will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, her sparkling smile, wit and playful nature.

She is survived by her children: Roberta Humphreys (Douglas), LeRoy (Lori), John (Roxanne), Kent (Rhonda), and Ranae Hatch (Thomas), 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brother Malcolm Wilkinson (Marion) and sister Valerie Ackerman. In addition to Robert, she is predeceased by her parents, Madge and Harold Wilkinson and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Mueller.

The family would like to thank the staff of the GSS Prairie Ridge Cottage One and Dr. Majken Villiger for taking such wonderful care of Maureen in her final days.

ROGAN, Dr. Ernest Jr.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Ernest Rogan Jr., on April 28, 2020.

Ernest was born in Lethbridge, on November 27, 1958. He always excelled in academics and graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine in 1985.

He was a kind, compassionate, dedicated psychiatrist, and worked for Alberta Health Services in Edmonton and surrounding areas for almost 35 years.

Ernest was a tender and adoring companion to his wife, Anne, and they always enjoyed spending time in Arizona. He loved his family, a round of golf and his standard poodles. He was an avid learner, always curious. He had a gentleness that will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his parents, Anna and Ernest Sr.; his wife, Anne; stepdaughters, Jennifer (Jason), Amy, Gillian (Dustin); and grandchildren, Benjamin, Elizabeth and William.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Humane Society of Edmonton would be greatly appreciated.

1973 – 2020

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Zsolt Varga, our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, coworker and friend.

Zsolt Varga of Coaldale, beloved and dear husband of Patty, and father to Jenna and Brendan, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020 at the age of 46 years.

Besides his loving wife Patty; daughter Jenna and son Brendan; mother Magda Varga; sister Maggie (Gord) Curran and their children Shaun, Ryan (Crystal), Craig and Kayla (Colby); great-niece Chelsea; father and mother-in-law Menzo and Brenda Vander Deen; sister-in-law Gwen (Joel) Paschke and their children Natalia and Anneka; sister-in-law Nicole (Russell) Kiefuik; brother-in-law Mike Vander Deen as well as many co-workers and friends. He will be remembered and missed dearly by all who knew him.
