OTTO MARTEN

1930 – 2020

OTTO FRANZ ERICH MARTEN passed away suddenly at home on the morning of Thursday, May 7, 2020 at the age of 89 years.

Otto was born on October 24, 1930 in Prust, Pommern, Germany and was forced to flee his homeland near the end of the war. He settled in the Ruhr valley in West Germany and worked as a coal miner, where he achieved journeyman status. He met the love of his life, Maria, at a May Day dance – she was preparing to leave and he convinced her to have one dance with him. That dance lasted for 71 years; they got married five years after that first dance and continued dancing for another 66 years. Mom and dad came to Canada in 1955, with dad coming first, arriving in Canada with one suitcase full of clothes and one suitcase full of tools, convinced he would have to build his home out in the wilderness. Dad told us many wonderful stories about his arrival and first few years in Canada. After spending the first year working in Waterton, they moved to Lethbridge where dad started working in the coal mine. After the coal mine shut down, he started working for Ellison Mills. During his time at Ellison, he started up his landscaping company, Otto Marten Landscaping. Many of his projects, such as the sidewalk going to the Japanese Gardens, have stood the test of time and are still there for Lethbridge residents to enjoy. He was recognized for his work when he received the immigrant achievement award for business in 2010.

Otto loved the outdoors – he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and even when his health started to fail, he still enjoyed going outdoors and experiencing nature with his family. He was also very proud of his German heritage and his membership in the German-Canadian Club and showed it by dedicating many hours volunteering his services. He loved his German card game, Skat, and enjoyed playing it at the German Canadian Club and at home, often with his good friend Wolfgang Otto – and sometimes, their discussion over their respective strategies could be heard throughout the house!

He was predeceased by his parents Karl & Freida Marten and his siblings Kurt Marten and Irene Schulz. His life was a definition of true compassion and love. Otto was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed by his wife, Maria, son Karl (Charlotte), daughters Connelia and Renate (Bruce), grandchildren Kris (Jodie), Karina (Boyd), Lindsay, Skye (Richard) and Iain, and great-grandchildren, Bryson, Brianna, Caderick and Dallin.

A Public Viewing at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Due to current restrictions, entry will be limited to 15 people at any given time.

Due to the current pandemic, a Private Family Service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. The Service will be livestreamed, and it can be viewed on our website under Otto’s obituary.

Olga Pavlenko

1922 – 2020

Mrs. Olga Pavlenko of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2020, at the age of 98 years. She is the beloved wife of the late Dimitry Pavlenko.

Olga was born near Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine on January 1, 1922 to a family of Kulaks. Shortly after the Russian Revolution, her family lost their farm and were displaced. They all managed to survive the Ukrainian famine, as well as Joseph Stalin’s regime. During WWII, Olga worked for a farmer in Germany as an unpaid slave labourer, to which she was thankful because even though the labour was continuously physically demanding, she said that she was lucky that she could still eat some potatoes while she picked them, and could drink the milk that she was milking from the cows. The farmer was kind to her, and she knew that others had a worse experience than hers.

After the war ended, she sought out to find her parents and siblings. After over a year, she was reunited with both of her parents in Germany. Not long after, they made their way to Belgium, where she met and married Dimitry Pavlenko and together with her parents, the four of them emigrated to Canada in September of 1950.

They settled in Coaldale, Alberta with distant relatives. Olga had her first child, Alex, on December 1, 1950, and Nick came on September 22, 1954. Olga was an amazing cook, baker, seamstress, and all-round home maker. She also worked in the beet fields and Lilydale.

Her first grandchild, Terry, was born in 1980, Angela in 1983, and Camille in 1989. Her and her husband took care of Terry and Angela every day while their parents worked, and they established and kept an incredible bond with them to this very day. She also spent a lot of time with Camille later in life when Camille lived with her during University years. Olga was an extremely cherished Grandmother who will not be forgotten.

Olga also became a Great-Grandmother in 2016, followed by an additional 2 more in 2017 and 2019. She loved those boys with all her heart as well.

Olga is survived by her loving son, Alex Pavlenko of Lethbridge, who helped take care of her over the past 20 years. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Terry (Kristina) Pavlenko of Calgary, Angela (Nicholas) Quinn of Calgary, and Camille Pavlenko of Calgary, as well as her 3 great grandsons, and her niece, Olga Pysarenko of Kiev, Ukraine.

Besides her beloved husband, Olga is predeceased by her son, Nick Pavlenko, parents; Kateryna and Trokhim Spitzky, her sister Katya, her brother Oleksiy, and two nieces.

A private Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, May 15, 2020, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, with Rt. Rev. Father Taras Krochak clergy, officiating. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Due to the COVID-19 rules, the funeral will be kept to immediate family only, but for those who wish, please visit http://www.mbfunerals.com click on Olga’s obituary to view the live stream of the service.

VERES, ANDREW

NOVEMBER 30, 1930 – MAY 3, 2020

Andy was born on November 30, 1930, in the family home in Coalhurst, Alberta, to Hungarian immigrant parents, Sandor and Mary Veres. The family of eight children included Andy’s four sisters, Esther, Barbara, Julia and Margaret, and three brothers, Joe, Bob and Dave.

Despite growing up as a child in the depression era 1930’s, Andy had fond memories of his childhood, his family and friends, and never felt he experienced any real hardships. Hard work and self reliance were the qualities he acquired and which served him well throughout his life.

Andy married Jean Bannink in 1952 and after working in the coal mines at Shaughnessy and driving truck, moved to Calgary in 1956 to pursue his career as a firefighter, initially for the Department of Defense and later for the Calgary Fire Department. It was the perfect job for him as he was high energy, very fit and strong, had the right mentality and loved the camaraderie of the firehall. Andy and Jean raised a family of four children in Calgary – Ken, Judy, Randy and Betty Jean. Sadly, Jean passed away in 1982.

In 1984, Andy met a lovely lady, Louise Borggard, at a dance club in Calgary and discovered they both came from Southern Alberta, and with this strong connection developed a lasting relationship and married in 1986. After their marriage, they purchased a home in Coalhurst.

Retirement from the Fire Department came in 1989. Andy and Louise embarked on a new phase in their lives, enjoying travels to Arizona, Texas and California in their trailer in the winter and followed rodeo events in the summer. They led an active social life with family and friends, especially weekly dances and cards.

Andy had a great interest and love of the Canadian West and its early history. As a young man he participated in some rodeo events and owned and trained horses. He was an avid gardener and fisherman, loved animals and enjoyed the antics of small children. Simply put, Andy was an outgoing, happy person, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Andy’s health declined over the past two years. He received much assistance from his nephew, Gerry Veres, and was well cared for at home by Louise, and it was only in late April that Andy moved to the Good Samaritan West Highland Centre where he passed away peacefully on May 3, 2020, at the age of 89 years.

Andy was predeceased by his parents, first wife Jean, daughter Judy, son-in-law Ross McArthur, sisters Esther Starkey and Margaret Sanders, and brothers Joe, Bob and Dave. He is survived by his sisters Barbara Rudan and Julia Welsh. He leaves many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.

Andy will be lovingly remembered by his wife Louise, his sons Ken (Marilyn) and Randy, and daughter Betty Jean McArthur, as well as Louise’s four sons, Kevin, Kerry (Patty), Rick (Beatrice) and Blair. He is survived by nine grandchildren – Roxanne (Nelson), Rachelle (Scott), Morgan (Lindsay), Julie, Gina, Kendra (Josh), Michael, Paul and Ben. He also leaves four greatgrandchildren, Charlize, Brielle, Nolan and Austin, whom he thought the world of.

The family wishes to thank Drs. Cunningham and Jamieson, Chelsea at Home Care, and the staff at West Highland for their support.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to STARS air ambulance or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Due to the current pandemic, a Service of Remembrance will be held at a later date.

VOGEL

January 13, 1962 – May 5, 2020

It is with great sadness we announce that ERIC VOGEL, beloved husband and best friend of Linda Vogel, passed away peacefully with loving family by his side on May 5, 2020, at the age of 58.

He was the dearly loved son of Johannes and Elisabeth Vogel, and brother of Marianna (Greg) Schmidt, Christine (John) Kobza, and Lawrence (Leslie) Vogel. He was an amazing uncle to several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his older brother, Mark Vogel.

Eric was born on January 13, 1962 in Lethbridge. He attended school in Turin then Picture Butte High School before attending Lethbridge College for Agriculture Technology. At the age of 5, Eric’s love and passion for farming began where he worked with much enjoyment, dedication, and perfection.

Eric constantly guided, taught, mentored, and empowered his daughters to achieve their very best, to approach life with the highest amount of respect and kindness for others, and to emulate the morals, values, and faith that was important to him. Throughout the years, Eric made numerous life-long friends which he cherished just like family. He was a positive influence to all he met.

Eric had a life well lived and full of purpose, a life full of endless love and kindness, a life filled with memories that will remain forever in our hearts, and a life that leaves a legacy behind to make this world a better place.

In Eric’s last weeks, he informed his wife and daughters that he “lived a great, fulfilled life, enjoyed and experienced all he wanted to do with nothing left undone”, and that he is “forever grateful and blessed with such an extraordinary, loving family, and incredible friends”, and of course, to “Let the Good Times Roll” (– The Cars).

In lieu of flowers, Eric would want you to express your love and contribute time to those you value.

Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, May 15, 2020 from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Due to the current pandemic, admittance will be limited to 15 people at any given time.
