Trio selected to Junior Team Development camp

Three familiar names to southern Alberta hockey fans were among 15 Western Hockey League players – and 41 players nationally – invited to Hockey Canada’s virtual National Junior Team Summer Development Camp.

Lethbridge Hurricanes forward and captain Dylan Cozens, Lethbridge product and Brandon Wheat Kings forward Ridly Greig and former Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawk and Vancouver Giants defenceman Bowen Byram are among the WHL talent selected to the camp slated to run July 27-31.

Lethbridge’s Michael Dyck – currently the head coach of the Vancouver Giants – will serve as one of the assistant coaches.

The 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place in Edmonton and Red Deer.

Selected in the first round and seventh overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2019 NHL draft, Cozens, led the Hurricanes with 38 goals and 85 points in 51 games last season. The product of Whitehorse won gold with Team Canada at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Greig, selected in the first round and eighth overall by the Wheaties in the 2017 bantam draft, tallied 26 goals and 60 points in 56 games last season.

The local product who will turn 18 Aug. 8 is eligible for this year’s NHL draft. He was ranked 25th among North American skaters at the midterm before moving up to 14th.

Byram, selected by the Colorado Avalanche fourth overall in the 2019 NHL draft, had 14 goals and 52 points in 50 games with Vancouver last year.

The Cranbrook blue liner played for the Golden Hawks in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

and played eight games with the Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes in 2016-17.
