Two local students will each receive $1,000 towards their post-secondary education from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Southern Alberta Chapter. This local chapter of fundraising professionals created the Inspiring Philanthropy in Lethbridge & Southwestern Alberta Scholarship to celebrate and foster philanthropy in southern Alberta.

This year the AFP Board of Directors granted two scholarships: one each to Jack Harding and SarahAnn Walker recognizing their contributions to their school and larger communities.

Harding, graduating from Winston Church High School, volunteered and took leadership positions with the WCHS Interact (Rotary) Club and with MLA Shannon Phillips. “I learned that every single individual is capable of massive change,” Harding said. “I have been so lucky to see that volunteering can change lives.”

Walker, graduating from Coalhurst High School, received recognition for numerous philanthropic activities. These included involvement in both community and school activities. “They gave me the chance to develop my leadership skills and give back to a community that has done so much for me,” said Walker referring to her different volunteer experiences.

AFP Southern Alberta created the scholarship on the fifth anniversary of the Inspiring Philanthropy Awards in Lethbridge, in conjunction with National Philanthropy Day (NPD).

The scholarship honours Grade 12 or first-year post-secondary students who best exemplify positive civic and community support through their interest in, commitment to and active involvement in volunteer and philanthropic causes.

“Congratulations to each of the recipients and thank you for making our communities a better place to live, work, and play,” said NPD Co-Chair Monica Loewen. “It is very encouraging to see young people involved in philanthropy.”

“Congratulations, Jack and Sarah. Your kindness and respect for others and your community is remarkable and I cannot wait to see where your career path takes you,” said AFP Southern Alberta Board Chair Jess Fehr. “I know you will continue to be philanthropic leaders in your communities and will teach others along the way. Well done!”
