Watermain work, twinning to result in road closures

The City has announced three road closures due to watermain work and twinning.

Work began Thursday on the renewal of watermains at two general locations: 6 Avenue from 5 Street to 7 Street South and 9 Avenue North, a half a block east of 20 Street.

Sixth Avenue South will be partially closed with traffic restricted to the north half of the road. South access to 6 Avenue will not be available at 5, 6, and 7 Streets. For the 9 Avenue North portion of the project, 9 Avenue will be fully closed at the worksite location for some phases of the project, the City said in a release. When possible, the south lane will open to through traffic. Motorists are encouraged to follow posted signage.

Work on 6 Avenue South portion of the project is expected to wrap up by the end of September. Work on 9 Avenue North portion of the project is expected to wrap up by the end of August.

Meanwhile, the next phase of construction for the University Drive West Twinning project is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, weather permitting.

To complete the roadway twinning construction west of the Sunridge roundabout, Sunridge Boulevard from University Drive to the roundabout at Mt. Sundance Road West will be closed to traffic. Vehicle traffic will be detoured to Rocky Mountain Boulevard West to access University Drive during this time.

To safely accommodate the work, the access will be closed starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday for approximately three weeks, weather permitting. The goal is to be done this phase before school begins on Aug. 31.

For the safety of construction workers, motorists are advised to drive with caution and to follow all construction and detour signs.

University Drive West is being twinned from north of Stadium Drive West to south of Sunridge Boulevard West to increase the roadway’s capacity for handling increasing traffic volumes. Future stages of work will involve additional partial intersection closures and additional PSAs will be issued in advance of these stages.
