Lethbridge judge appointed to Provincial Court of Alberta

A Lethbridge judge is one of two new assistant chief judges appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta.
Judge Sylvia L. Oishi was appointed as assistant chief judge for the southern region. She received her bachelor of science and arts from the University of Alberta in 1982, and her law degree in 1985. She was admitted to the bar in 1986 and has been a Provincial Court of Alberta judge since 2008. Prior to becoming a member of the judiciary, she was a partner with the Jervis Oishi Law Office from 1986 to 1998 and was a Crown prosecutor from 1998 to 2008.
She will be joined by Judge Aran Veylan for the Edmonton family and youth division.
“I congratulate judges Veylan and Oishi on their new roles. The courts play a very important role in ensuring all Albertans can access an effective justice system, and I am confident that their dedication and experience will continue to support the work of Alberta’s judiciary,” said Kaycee Madu, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, in a news release.
Candidates for the assistant chief judge position are recommended by the Provincial Court of Alberta Chief Judge, who is Derek Redman of Lethbridge, to the minister of justice. Assistant chief judges serve five-year terms.
Veylan and Oishi started their new roles on Sept. 1.
