Mr. Joachim “Jo” Blank of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Erika Blank, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at the age of 84 years.

COUSINS, WILLIAM (BILL)

Apr. 19, 1960 – Jan. 24, 2021

WILLIAM “BILL” DAVID COUSINS, soulmate and husband of Lily Lau-Cousins of 38 years, passed away suddenly but peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, due to medical complications (unrelated to Covid) with his family by his side, on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the age of 60 years.

Besides his wife Lily, Bill is survived by his sons Blake and Daniel (Tylyn) all of Taber; mother Becky Cousins of Lethbridge; brothers Barry (Mary), Bob (Lois) and Bruce (Cathy), and sister Bev (Harry); father-in-law Chung Ken (Joe) Lau; sister-in-law Lila (Mike); brothers-in-law Allan (Allyson) and David (Stephanie), as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to him.

Bill was predeceased by his father William “Bill” Cousins and mother-in-law Yick Fuen Tsang Lau.

Bill was born in Edmonton, but grew up in Lethbridge where he had many longtime friends that he had shared numerous legendary adventures with over the years. Despite his struggles with mental and physical problems in his adult life, he still tried to be positive and made the most of it. He always cheered for the underdogs in life and in sports, and was always willing to help everyone he met.

Thank you to Dr. E. Hardin for all her years of caring and patience; to Dr. I. Armstrong and Dr. A. Palma during the past few years; to the Psychiatry West and ICU staffs of the Chinook Regional Hospital for all their excellent care and kindnesses; and to many other various professionals too numerous to mention.

A private Family Memorial will be held, with a Celebration of Bill’s Life for family and friends to follow at a later date when possible.

Margaret Laura Duff (Hicks)

1938 – 2021

It is with heavy heart and deep sadness the family announces the sudden passing of our dear wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma Marg Duff at the age of 83 years, on Monday, January 25, 2021 at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, AB.

Marg came into the world on January 4, 1938, to George and Winifred (McKinley) Hicks in Vancouver, BC. She grew up in Namu, a small fishing port and former cannery town on the coast of British Columbia. Marg was the oldest child of five, with two brothers George (Dee) Hicks and Dave (Terry) Hicks, and two sisters Sharon (William) Woron and Colleen (Rick) Ward.

Marg attended John Oliver High school in Vancouver, BC when she met the love of her life, John Charles Duff, her high school sweetheart from a rival high school. They were married on September 10, 1960 and enjoyed over 60 years of marriage. Marg and John had two children: Keith and Laura. Marg is predeceased by her parents.

Marg co-owned Duff Insurance with her husband John in Lethbridge for 15 years then enjoyed 26 years of Retirement. An avid golfer, she especially enjoyed being a ‘Snowbird’ wintering at their condo on the golf course in Yuma, Arizona.

Over the years, Marg also enjoyed bowling, walking and playing card games and socializing with friends. Marg’s greatest joy was her family! She loved to support each and every one of their activities & was always volunteering at their events. Marg was our family’s biggest cheerleader. She loved to bring them together with her wonderful dinners and baking. She will be fondly remembered for her brownies, and especially her peanut butter cookies!

Marg will be dearly missed and forever loved by her husband John Duff; her two children Keith Duff and wife Jeannie of Lethbridge, AB; Laura (Duff) and husband Glenn Hermann of Chestermere, AB. She will be sadly missed by her two grandchildren Lindsey (Duff) and husband Blake Corey; and Carson Duff; her two great-grandchildren Hayden and Jackson Corey; her brothers and sisters; her numerous nephews and their families.

Marg was a very kind, selfless and generous woman who always had a smile and a hello for everyone. She will be missed by her many life-long friends and all who knew her.

Due to Covid-19, a celebration of Marg’s life will be held at a future date when we can safely gather.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the Physicians and all the staff, especially the nursing staff on Unit 4B; at the Chinook Regional Hospital for all your kindness and compassion during our most difficult time.

ENS, MARILYN JUNE (nee HOLLAND)

November 27, 1932 – January 20, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Ens in Edmonton after a short hospital stay. Marilyn will be deeply missed and cherished in memory by her loving husband Jacob Ens; daughters Barbara (Glen) Buchner and Christine Ens (Marvin Severson); grandchildren Andrew, Amanda, Ben (Shellie) and Emily; dear sister Janet Maryam Fisher, and brother Brian Holland. She was predeceased by her parents, Dean and Hazel Holland, and brothers Robert and Gordon Holland. Born and raised in southern Alberta, Marilyn was a proud graduate of the Galt School of Nursing, Lethbridge. She married Jake in 1956 and apart from a decade in Calgary, they raised their family in Edmonton. Marilyn enjoyed family gatherings, bridge parties with friends, sewing, volunteering at the Cross Cancer Institute, attending Edmonton Symphony concerts, and cheering on the Oilers. She and Jake loved taking cruises and escaping in the winter to Maui or Palm Springs. In summer, Waterton Lakes held a special place in her heart. In keeping with Marilyn’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and NWT. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at MacTaggart Place for their care and compassion over the last two years.

Aprilee was born on March 28, 1960 at the Blood Indian Hospital on the Blood Reserve, AB. How Aprilee received her Blackfoot name: Grandpa Frank Eagle Tailfeathers went to an Indian Days in the U.S. Grandpa Frank and Aprilee’s dad, Bob Eagle Tailfeathers were both Chicken Dancers. Grandpa Frank got up to dance and he was dancing alone, so Grandpa Frank gave April the name “Ni’táíhpiyaakiiwa” (Dancing Alone Woman). A Viewing will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Monday, February 1, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 am with a Family Service to follow at 11:00 am. (Due to COVID-19 – Limited people will be allowed in the building at a time.) Interment to follow at Eagle Tailfeathers family Cemetery.

MACDONALD

GERALDINE “GERRY” MACDONALD, beloved wife of the late Joseph MacDonald, passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the age of 99 years.

She is lovingly survived by her son Dan MacDonald of Lethbridge, as well as one nephew and five nieces, all of Ontario.

Besides her loving husband of 65 years, Joseph, she is pre-deceased by her daughter Cheryl A. MacDonald.

Gerry was known as a very loving mother and wife and throughout her life she always had a great fondness for life.

A Funeral Mass will be held at a later date. Gerry will be laid to rest with her beloved husband and daughter at Mountain View Cemetery.

Pierson, Chesley Nels

January 22, 1928 – January 23, 2021

Ches Pierson of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 23, 2021 at the age of 93. Ches was predeceased by his wife Joan on August 20, 2019; by his four siblings – Grace West, Dennis Pierson, Clinton Pierson and Pauline Bietz; and a grandson Nigel Scott.

Ches is survived by seven children and their families; Val Dean (Brenda) Pierson, of Calgary, Rose Lynn (Mayne) Root, of Chestermere, Michele (Mike) Merrill, of Queen Creek, AZ, Julie (Mervin) Orr of Lethbridge, Michael (Kathleen) Pierson of Calgary, Alice (Gary) Wheeler, of Aurora, CO, and Barbara (Bruce) Humphreys, of Calgary; 41 grandchildren; 80 great grandchildren; a large extended family and many friends.

Ches was born in Lethbridge and raised in Jefferson and Sterling, Alberta. After High School he attended Brigham Young University and then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to England, a time in his life that he cherished. After returning from England, he met Joan Rose, the sister of one of his missionary companions. Soon after they were engaged and married in the Logan Utah Temple. They began their life together in Calgary where they settled and raised their family.

Ches worked in various positions until he was offered the opportunity to work in funeral service, his life long desire. He began at Foster’s Garden Chapel, then later moved to Cy Foster Gooder Funeral Home. He left funeral service for about five years to work at Cowley and Keith Real Estate, a move that allowed him to use his organizational and social skills.

During this time, his son Val began working in Funeral Service which provided many family and friends to continue to be cared for by a Pierson family member. After the sudden collapse of Cowley and Keith and without employment, our family decided to open our own funeral home. Ches, Joan & Val, along with the support of many renovated a building & opened Pierson’s Funeral Service in Forest Lawn in 1983. This was the realization of a life long dream and they worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the business.

Ches and Joan served two missions for the church, first in Oakland, CA and then in the London England Temple. Upon returning to Calgary, they moved to the community of Oakridge and then when Joan’s health began to fail, into Garrison Green.

Ches loved to serve others and he loved to work! In his younger years, he supplemented his income by teaching Dale Carnegie, which enhanced his skills in public speaking. He served in many positions in the Church, including Home Teacher, Bishop, Patriarch and other Stake callings, and a variety of callings as a teacher. Rotary was an important part of his life and he was a member of the Rotary Club of Calgary East.

Ches loved to garden and couldn’t walk past a weed without stopping to pull it out. He also loved reading and capturing all of the details in any magazine or newspaper. He clipped, copied & mailed articles to many friends and family. Personal notes of appreciation and praise were sent to many, whether it was for music he heard, talks he slept through, or any praiseworthy accomplishment. Although Ches’ resources were limited, he was generous to a fault, giving whenever he saw a need. He had an eye for detail and was meticulous in every way. If there’s an error in this obituary, he’d find it. He loved his sweets and it’s fitting that his last meal ended with his birthday cake & ice cream.

Ches loved each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He could remember their names and how many there were, showing his love in his own unique way. Through thick and thin we love our dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 2 at Pierson’s Funeral Home, 4121 – 17 Avenue SE, Calgary from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with a maximum of 20 persons attending at one time. A Funeral Service will be live broadcast on Wednesday, February 3 at 11:00 am, a link to the service is posted at http://www.piersons.ca. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to the charity of your choice.
