The Henderson Lake Golf Club is ready to tee things off in mid-March.
The golf course off Mayor Magrath Drive will be open to the public Friday, well before its usual opening time of the beginning of April.
As they did last summer, the Henderson Lake Golf Club will pay heed to all COVID-19 protocol, but the cries of “Fore!” will be heard heading into this weekend.
“We try for April 1, so any type of March golf is a bonus. We’re happy with it for sure” said Henderson Lake Golf Club head professional Cam Waldbauer.
What’s better, the course has wintered well, said Waldbauer.
“The biggest thing we worry about is the greens and it looks like all the greens and tee boxes wintered well. We’re excited. We’re basically doing the same thing we did last year for COVID protocols. But other than that, the tee boxes are open. As for March 12, that’s all the customers want at this point, just getting outdoors and getting some exercise and playing the game they love.”
As for the pandemic protocols, Waldbauer said the rules are pretty much the same as last year.
“Obviously, we’re trying to get everyone to book online as much as they can and pay up front just to lessen the amount of traffic we have at the front counter for the beginning of the year,” he said. “Other than that, there’s a maximum of three people allowed in the pro shop to do their purchases for now. We sanitize everything and tell everyone to social distance as best as best they can. The golf itself, they don’t have rakes or ball washers or anything like that on the course, similar to last year. We’re just doing everything we can to have less touch points.”
With the cart situation, Waldbauer said a golfer can ride with someone else if they’re comfortable with them, but they can also go by themselves.
Though Henderson Lake Golf Club will open its doors Friday, events the course would normally hold over the summer remain a question mark.
“It’s still too early to tell,” said Waldbauer.
“We’re looking like we’ll be able to run some sort of tournament. So if someone wants a 72-person tournament or even a 90-person tournament we can probably do everything from outside and do a barbeque.”
In the meantime, Henderson Lake Golf Club members have been able to get a course preview and get in a few practise swings as well with Friday’s opening date approaching.
“Members have come out and just hit a ball,” said Waldbauer. “Obviously, they can’t go out on tee boxes or greens or anything like that. They’re happy they’re outdoors playing golf. They’re excited the course looks good, just to be doing this, so they’re pretty ecstatic.”
