Additional sentence asks inmate to ‘play nice’ while in jail

An inmate serving time at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre has had a few more days tacked onto her sentence.
Lorlette Salarda pleaded guilty Monday in Lethbridge provincial court to a charge of assaulting a peace officer, and was sentenced to 15 days in jail, which will run concurrently with an unrelated sentence she is already serving.
Although she was initially charged with sexual assault, Crown Prosecutor Clayton Giles changed the charge to assault, and told court the offence occurred April 22 when Salarda was receiving medical attention at the jail. She stepped away from her guard to receive the medical help, and when she returned she made a sudden movement with her hand toward the guard’s belt.
“She came into contact with the guard’s clothing,” Giles said.
No other contact occurred, but the unexpected movement did cause the guard some anxiety, Giles said.
Giles added Salarda, 33, has a criminal record, although most of her convictions are from B.C. She has, however, a recent assault conviction in Calgary.
Giles said the 15-day sentence he and defence recommended Monday is intended to get Salarda’s attention that she needs to “play nice” while she’s in jail.
Defence told court Salarda suffers from some mental health issues, and is remorseful for her actions.
