Joe was born in the Netherlands in 1932, and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1950. He married his beloved Johanna in 1960. Together they raised four children in the Lethbridge area. Joe had two careers: first with Duff Sound Equipment and then serving Maranatha Christian reformed Church.

Joe is survived by Johanna, his children and their spouses, Gordon and Michelle, Anna and Ron, Kenneth and Myrna, and Beverly and Roy; grandchildren Rebecca and Christopher, Josh and Melissa, Travis and Courtney, Jorden, and Alyssa; great-grandchildren Elijah, Clare, Case, Rylee Elyse, and Josephine.

A Memorial Service will be held at MARANATHA CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 260 McGill Blvd. W, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, July 5, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Paul Van Stralen officiating. The service will be livestreamed and may be accessed via Joe’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

BARTON

MELVIN BARTON passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021, in Lethbridge at the age of 90 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years of marriage; Leslie Ann; his daughter, Marla Jean (Duncan) McGeorge; his son, Cameron (Lilian) Barton; his grandchildren: Paige McGeorge (Devan Vincent); Clair (David) Eade, Kaitlynn (Tim) Weaver; his great-grandchildren: Elliott Duncan Eade, Olive Elizabeth Eade and Sidney Cameron Weaver; a brother-in-law, several sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was very proud of his family and their achievements.

Melvin was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Henry Barton, and his brothers, Richard and Jerrold (Evelyn) Barton.

Melvin was born in the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, on June 7, 1931. He grew up on the family farm in Wrentham, Alberta. He was raised in the Lutheran Church and remained faithful to the Lord throughout his life. He was known for his hard work, honesty and integrity. Alternating between Calgary and Lethbridge, he held a variety of positions in sales and management, culminating with Harcros Chemicals in Calgary. Melvin and Leslie lived in Calgary for 30 years, retiring in Lethbridge in 2006. In his earlier years, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing, while in his later years, he was an avid golfer.

During the past 16 months, Melvin resided in Age Care Columbia. Our family is grateful for their care, keeping him safe throughout the pandemic. He now rests in the loving arms of the Lord.

A private service will be held on July 8th, 2021, at 11:00 AM. The service will be livestreamed and available to view via Melvin’s obituary on the Cornerstone Website.

It is with great sorrow that we the families announce the sudden passing of our beloved Elissa Jade “EJ” Day Chief “Kaina’akii” “Matsikamosakii” who has gone on to join our Creator at the age of 34 years on June 27, 2021, in Cardston, AB. EJ leaves to mourn her pride and joys, her sons, Trontay (Margie) and Sootaa Bronc, as well as her spouse, Jonathan Shot Both Sides, lil Jon, Jonelle and Liam. Siblings, Tashina (Nikki) Soup, Michelle (Andrew) ETFeathers, Angie, Andrew Jr., Chad, Mason & Nora Day Chief, Thea; Nephews & Nieces, Wade (Zenna), Cason, Zander, Joran, Jaya, Zarah, Champ, Avaya, Anthony, Kylie, Xavier, McKenna, and Christina. EJ was a wonderfully caring mother to her sons; her love for them was beyond measure. She admired her nieces and nephews and had a special bond with each and every one of them. She adored babies and children and always had to be holding them ever since her young years. She loved visiting and surrounding herself with family and her numerous friends. She loved family events and gatherings and was always laughing and joking around. Her smile and her incredible sense of humor captivated everyone. EJ grew up on the Blood reserve where she spent a majority of her teenage years in the Bull horn and Levern area, as well as Standoff. She had lived at Fort Macleod, Lac La Biche, and Brocket. EJ moved to Calgary in 2006 where she resided until 2012. Her time in Calgary was where she flourished and enjoyed living the city life. She has met so many people along her journey here and made many friends along the way. EJ’s educational journey began at Fort Macleod, Kainai and continued at; Lac La Biche, Brocket and Kainai high school. She later completed her upgrading and graduated from Red Crow Community College. Elissa had recently been accepted into the Arts and Science program for September 2021 where she planned to further her post-secondary education. Her places of employment include Bouvry Exports, Prince of Wales, Bayshore, Waterton Lodge & Resorts, and Zellers. Her most recent place of employment was working in eCommerce and Marketing with It Works as an avid Sales Rep for the past year. She was very passionate and good at her position with the online company, and happy with being able to work from home providing for her family. EJ was predeceased by her niece Kaley Wells, cousin Cobin Young Pine, aunt Lorelie Medicine Crane, grandmother Nora Day Chief, grandfathers: Anthony “Tony” Eagle Tail Feathers and Calvin Day Chief. Great grandparents; Elizabeth and Issac Crow Chief, Adeline and William ‘Bill’ Singer, Margaret and Frank Good Rider, Annie and Richard “Dick” Day Chief. Other relatives and family, Allen, Tara, Fredrick and Ethan Bare Shin Bone, Tara, Lyle, and Gage Good Rider. EJ was a once in a lifetime person she had an amazing positive personality. She was always there for her loved ones, her family, and her friends. EJ’s ability to always be happy and excited about life was something to be admired. No matter the adversities she was strong-willed and always persevered. She will be sadly missed by all her family and all who loved her. A Candlelight Vigil will take place on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 7:00 pm in Cardston, AB (87 – 7th Ave. West). The Wake will be held at The Tanner Seniors Center, Cardston (260 1 St W.) on Monday, July 5, 2021 from 6:00 pm to Midnight. Hilda Dick

1927 – 2021

Ms. Hilda Dick of Lethbridge, formerly of Coaldale, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Hilda was born on May 4, 1927 in a simple farm building on a farmyard six miles southeast of Coaldale, Alberta. Having arrived half an hour after her twin brother Walter, she officially became the eighth child in the Johann and Liese Dick family which eventually numbered 13. She was always a busy person even at an early age, helping her twin brother strip beautiful ripe berries from a current bush and scattering them on the ground. Later, she focused her energies on more positive endeavors, teaching Sunday school and preparing Christmas presents for her many nieces and nephews. Ministering to patients in the Coaldale hospital and for 34 years serving in the Coaldale Medical Clinic was her life occupation.

When her parents retired in 1957, Hilda became their care giver in their home in Coaldale. After her father passed away, she continued to care for her mother for another 34 years. Later she continued her ministry to her only surviving sister, Louise Allert in Black Rock Terrace for two years.

Hilda is survived by three brothers, a host of nieces and nephews as well as many friends who’s lives she has impacted though her church and the Coaldale community, plus those friends at Black Rock Terrace who became family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta with Pastor Gary Burke, officiating.

A Private Family Interment will follow in the Coaldale Mennonite Cemetery

Ernie Nottingham

1930 – 2021 

Ernest Wesley Nottingham, beloved husband of Bonnie Nottingham, left this world unexpectedly on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the age of 90 years.  A private funeral service will be held at Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber on Saturday, July 17, 2021. Burial to follow at Archmount Cemetery, Lethbridge. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.  Ernie will be sorely missed by his wife Bonnie and their three daughters Lynne (Steven) Zundel of Raleigh, North Carolina, Sandra (Kevin) Cooper of Okotoks and Joanne (Darrell) Kuryvial of Taber; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Ernie was born on September 20, 1930, at the home of his grandmother in New Dayton to George and Gladys Nottingham of Warner.  He attended the rural Powell School east of Warner. Ernie rode his horse or biked to school everyday. After completing his schooling, he started farming with his dad on the family farm.  In the winter months he worked in Lethbridge and Calgary driving taxi and other various jobs. Ernie continued to farm and eventually took over the farm from his father.   On February 2, 1952 he married the love of his life, Bonnie Minion of Warner. Together they farmed and raised three daughters.  Ernie was a kind, honest, hard working man. He loved farming and helping others and was a genuine friend to all he met. His quiet, caring nature was a great asset to the many boards he served on in his community. Bonnie and Ernie traveled extensively in their retirement and made many friends along the way.  Winters were spent in Arizona and summers at their cabin in Swan Lake, Montana. Lillian Marie Riley, beloved wife of the late Charlie Riley, passed away in Bow Island on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the age of 87 years. The Celebration of Lil’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 135 – 2nd Avenue West, Bow Island,  on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with Gloria Angle officiating. Josie (Rollag) Williams

March 23, 1914 – June 14, 2021

Josie was born in Wrentham, AB to John and Amanda Rollag. She was the middle child of seven, four girls and three boys. Josie attended school in Wrentham until grade 11 and took her grade 12 in Lethbridge at the LCI. While there, she met her lifelong friend Effie (Lothian) Jones. When the accommodation her Dad had arranged for her didn’t work out, Effie’s parents kindly allowed her to live with them. The bond between Josie and Effie’s families remained strong throughout their lives. Josie enrolled in the Galt School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1937. She was very pleased to receive the General Nursing Award.

Josie married Harold Williams in 1935 and they had three children, Terry, Truman and JoAnn. She worked in many areas of Nursing while raising a family and spent time training in the X-Ray Department with Dr. Rose, which she enjoyed very much. Josie worked full time as Supervisor of Central Supply when the new Municipal Hospital opened in 1955. She remained there until her retirement at the end of 1971. She enjoyed her years with her co-workers and the many Nursing students who trained in the department. Josie loved walking, going to Keep-Fit and badminton at the Lethbridge Civic Centre. The whole family played badminton; Josie played into her 80’s. She attended the Nurses Alumnae Banquet each June where she connected with classmates and other nurses.

Josie was predeceased by her son Terry in 1996, her husband Harold in 1997, her grandson Faron Rose in 2015 and her son-in-law Ted Cuell in 2021. She was predeceased by all her siblings; her youngest sister, Helen Mackenzie, passed away in Lethbridge on March 14, 2021.

She is survived by her son Truman (Karin) of Kelowna, her daughter JoAnn Cuell of Canmore and her daughter-in-law MariAnne (Lee) Fairbanks of Edmonton, and 10 grandchildren: Shauna Gervais, Jody Smith, Kurt Williams, Karen Huculak, Todd Williams, Dennis Williams, Lori Williams Davies, Trent Cuell, Rob Cuell and Lisa Tonellato. Josie is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren.

Josie loved having family around and she and Harold moved to Canmore in 1992 to be closer to their daughter and family. She moved to the Golden Eagle View Long Term Care Unit at the Canmore Hospital at the age of 97 where she resided until her passing. She will be truly missed by the wonderful staff there and of course by all her Family.

We would like to give a Huge Thanks to staff at the Golden Eagle View for the Care, Kindness and LOVE shown to Josie over the years, YOU ARE THE BEST!! Thanks also to Dr. Emma Morin for her care and concern for Josie.

A family graveside service was held on June 29, 2021 at Archmount Memorial Gardens in Lethbridge where she was laid to rest next to her husband Harold. Pastor Lee Loveridge of the Immanuel Lutheran Church officiated.

WRIGHT

Allan (Whitey) Wright of House Wright and Coleman, First of his Name, Tormentor of the Seven (children) and Protector of the Fifteen (grandchildren), Master of Snakebites, Zealot of Golf, Cracker of Bullwhips, Mentor of Hockey, Champion of Rook, Binder of Socks, Obsessor of Sports and Counter of Ribs died on June 28, 2021.

As his name implies, Whitey Wright was legendary, especially to children. If you were a child (or the parent of a child) and crossed paths with Whitey, you likely remember simultaneously feeling deathly terrified, electrifyingly excited and unconditionally loved. You knew a maelstrom was about to unfold whenever Whitey entered a room, even if it were only for one of his notoriously brief cameo appearances. You also knew at least some collateral damage would be left in his wake. He was usually the quietest in the room but caused the most raucous. He wound up the kids in a whirlwind of chaos and then quietly snuck out before anyone knew what hit.

Whitey’s many years of coaching hockey were memorable to his athletes, who talk about him affectionately decades later. Known for a quick and sometimes fiery temper, his locker room pep talks could be colorful and unconventional, but almost always delivered the desired results. He had a way of being stern with his players in a way that lifted them up, motivated them and brought out their best. If you were a student in his Sunday School classes, you might remember being held upside down over the garbage pail if you misbehaved. It wasn’t coincidence that the rowdiest kids always seemed to end up in Whitey’s class. He was the only teacher that could keep them in line, all while somehow magically making going to Sunday School class enjoyable. The wilder you were the more he loved you and usually, the more you loved him.

Whitey was born in Cardston, Alberta to Leatha (Coleman) and Robert Wright on May 10, 1944. Initially christened Allan, his snow-white hair led to his childhood nickname of ‘Whitey’. While his golden locks darkened over the years, the name stuck, so much so that to this day, few knew his actual first name. Whitey was raised in Beazer and Cardston, AB with his four siblings Robert, Gary, Arvella and Reva. They grew up in a tiny one-bedroom home.

Whitey married the love of his life, Brenda Forsyth in 1971. They were blessed with 7 children: Kristi (Ryan), Ryan (Allan), Ronna (Michael), Darren (Jerilyn), Regan (Luis), Dustin (Oxana) and Karlee (Kyle). Whitey’s pride and greatest source of joy were his fifteen grandchildren. In his last months, his toddler granddaughter Halli would climb into his lap and quietly sit with him, sometimes for hours. As he struggled to breath at times with the progression of his illness, his greatest consolation was his grandchildren.

In his final weeks, Whitey was often seen tearing through Raymond streets on his new e-Bike, oxygen tank strapped to his back, helmet-be-damned and at full-throttle, “bangs-up” speeds leaving a cloud of dust in his path. Whitey passed away on Monday, after attending his last “Council of the Elders” at the local Subway shop. It was here the Elders would deliberate the “going-ons” of the day and commensurate over their respective ailments. He took one final spin on his beloved e-Bike before returning home. He left the world as he lived his life, unpredictably and on his own terms. His family and friends will forever miss him and are grateful his timing has allowed them to gather together to celebrate the amazing life he lived.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 5th at the Taylor Street Chapel in Raymond, AB. Whitey’s family will visit with friends and family at a viewing in the same chapel on Sunday, July 4th at 7:00 to 8:00 pm and again on Monday at 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. The burial will be following funeral services in the Cardston Cemetery. The Service will be live-streamed and accessed via the obituary on the Salmon and Sons Website.

ZEMP

MARIE DAHL ZEMP, beloved wife of the late Reed Holt Zemp, passed away in Cardston, AB, on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, two siblings and one great grandchild. She is survived by all of her seven children and their spouses: Karen Chipman (Robin), Kathy Meyer (Glen), Logan Zemp (Cyndy), Gary Zemp (Lynn Marie), Dal Zemp (Amy), Marilyn Lathen (Larry), Kevin Zemp (Janni). She also has 35 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren.

Marie was born on April 7, 1929 in Raymond Alberta to Rulon and Phoebe Dahl. She was raised in a happy family, and was busy with farm, church and school work. After graduating High School she attended the University of Alberta where she received her teaching certificate. Her first year of teaching was at a rural school near Lacombe.

She returned to Raymond to teach, where she met Reed, who had just returned from a church mission, and was the “handsome guy” teaching her Sunday School class. They were married in 1951 in the Cardston Temple. After farming for several years, they moved to Edmonton and then to Provo, Utah, to enable Reed to finish his education.

The young family moved to Cardston in 1966. She was always convinced that Cardston was the best place in the world to raise her children. She provided a fun and happy home environment – not just for her children but also for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Wonderful and lasting memories were created at their humble home on the east hill of Cardston. She taught us all important life lessons through her example, sacrifice, encouragement and zest for life and adventure.

She loved teaching children and from a young age, while many of her friends were playing with dolls, she played “school teacher” with small rocks for students. Her “make believe” teaching included seating assignments and consequences for misbehaving students (rocks). Marie taught Kindergarten for many years and is beloved by hundreds of her former students.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an important part of her life. She served faithfully in many service and leadership roles in her ward and stake. After retirement, she served an 18-month mission, with her dear husband, in Zimbabwe, Africa. She loved the Temple and served as a temple worker for many years and as Assistant Matron for three years. Many people were blessed by her service and she opened her home on many occasions to others in need of lodging and a meal.

Her cheerful and determined handling of her husband’s many years of illness, as well as her own health struggles, is a family legacy! She taught us all how to live a full and happy life. She taught us how to cheerfully face challenges and adversity with determination. Surely she is one that the Master welcomed with open arms and the greeting – “well done though good and faithful servant”.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers and friends who treated her so well and help make her last years more comfortable. Friends may meet the Family at the Legacy Funeral Home in Cardston on Wednesday, July 7th, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Private Family Funeral Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home on Thursday, July 8th, at 11:00 am. Interment in the Aetna Cemetery.
