Local LFC product Vega joins Kodiaks

By Lethbridge Herald on July 9, 2021.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks continues to add to their roster in anticipation of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season in the fall.

The Kodiaks shopped local this time, announcing the commitment of Catholic Central High School graduate Julio Vega on Thursday.

Vega, a defender, is also a product of the Lethbridge Football Club.

Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey said Vega should fit into the Kodiaks culture.

“Julio plays right defense,” said Carey in a statement. “He’s got some tenacity to his game and he’s a great team player. I just enjoy watching how hard he works in training and I look forward to seeing him in our sessions and getting him to that next level.”

Working hard to get his game to the post-secondary level, Vega is proud to sign with his hometown team.

“It is really special to sign with the Kodiaks,” he said. “Starting my soccer career in Lethbridge, starting off with house league first, then club and now with the Whitecaps (‘Caps to College Academy) and now to Lethbridge College is just amazing.”

Playing college soccer close to home and signing alongside a number of childhood friends was also important.

On Tuesday, the Kodiaks announced the signing of fellow Lethbridge athlete Ryley Van Maanen.

“I just like it here in Lethbridge a lot and with these guys, I mean I’ve known some of them for like six years,” said Vega. “Ryley, he’s been a childhood friend since we were classmates in elementary. So, it means a lot to see your teammates and one of your closest friends actually succeeding in their life and making it to this level as well.”

Vega said his knowledge of the game is his strongest asset

“I mostly like playing in a possession-based system. I guess I can just adapt really quickly. Throughout my whole career I’ve been playing different styles. Now I’m just ready to adapt to play for Lethbridge College.”

Vega will begin the college’s Engineering Design Technology program when classes begin in the fall.
