Canes player, coach named to U-18 Summer Showcase

By Lethbridge Herald on July 9, 2021.

Two members of the Lethbridge Hurricanes are stepping up to the Hockey Canada ranks.

On Thursday, Hockey Canada announced Lethbridge Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio and defenseman Logan McCutcheon will attend Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team Summer Development Camp.

Kisio will serve as a coach for the Under-18 Canadian team, while 17-year-old McCutcheon joins the 45-man roster.

It’s not Kisio’s first stint with Hockey Canada.

The native of Calgary was behind the bench at the Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 levels, capturing a Hlinka Gretzky Cup Championship in 2018.

Kisio also served as an assistant coach at the 2019 World Junior Championship in Vancouver.

In six seasons as head coach of the Hurricanes, Kisio has a record of 203-124-33 in 360 regular season games.

He is also the all-time leader in coaching wins in Hurricanes history.

Under his watch, the Hurricanes have qualified for the Western Hockey League post-season five times, including a Central Division title in 2015-2016 and back-to-back appearances in the WHL’s Eastern Conference Championship Series in 2017 and 2018.

A native of Saskatoon, McCutcheon was drafted by the Hurricanes in the third round and 60th overall in the 2019 WHL Draft.

He played four games during the 2019-20 regular season, making his WHL debut Sept. 21, 2019 against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The five-foot-nine, 150-pound blue-liner played in 23 regular season games during the shortened 2021 season, scoring one goal and 11 points to finish second in scoring among defencemen.

Those totals earned McCutcheon the Carl Trentini Memorial Award as the Hurricanes Rookie of the Year.

Kisio and McCutcheon join Hurricanes general manager Peter Anholt, who is representing Canada at the Under-18 level on the management group.

The development camp will take place from July 25 to Aug. 4 at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on the Tsuut’ina Nation near Calgary.
