The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team looked to the north side to land their latest recruit.
On Monday, the Kodiaks announced the signing of Winston Churchill High School product Kyeler Viani to the roster in time for the 2021 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season.
Viani is a wing back who promises to bring speed and creativity to a Kodiaks team looking to defend its ACAC championship this fall.
“Kyeler is an all-round player. He’s got a lot of tools,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey in a statement.
“You love a guy like him that’s just tenacious, quick and aggressive. He’s got endless energy and skill too.”
The Kodiaks bench boss said he expects his latest signing to land a starting role right away.
“He’s got big shoes to fill with the departure of Joel (Arrieus) because he plays that right back position. With Joel being done playing his five years and being one of the best Kodiaks of all time, Kyeler’s got some big shoes to fill for sure, but he can do it.”
After losing the last season to the COVID-19 pandemic, Viani has made sure he’s ready to make the move to the college level.
“I’m definitely really excited,” said Viani.
“It’s going to be a big jump into a post-secondary level. I want to push myself to be the best player I can be. Bring pace for along the wings and creativity on the ball.”
With the Kodiaks granted approval to prepare for the fall season after the cancellation of the 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Viani said simply getting to meet his new teammates and get back on the field is exciting.
“With COVID and everything, practices have been slim. With the season hopefully coming back around I’m excited to get back on the field.”
