Dawgs Red walk-off the Bulls in Okotoks

By Lethbridge Herald on July 15, 2021.

A comeback win wasn’t in the cards for the Lethbridge Bulls.

Instead, it was the Okotoks Dawgs Red who pulled off the late-game dramatics with a 6-5 win in Western Canadian Baseball League play Wednesday night in Okotoks.

After Lethbridge scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to knot the score at 5-5, the Dawgs responded with a walkoff in the bottom of the inning as Brandon Hup singled and advanced to second on an error to shortstop.

Nash Crowell brought him in with a two-out single to hand the Bulls the loss that puts them at 7-8 as Lethbridge falls to 0-3 on their eight-game road swing.

Okotoks grabbed a 4-0 lead after three innings before the Bulls started battling back.

Kalen Haney scored on a error to centre field off the bat of catcher Noah Or to make it 4-1 Dawgs, but Okotoks got one back in their half of the fifth inning to move up 5-1.

Lethbridge’s Nick Gravel scored on a balk in the top of the eighth inning and Torrin Vaselenak crossed on a sacrifice fly to left field from Haney to make it 5-3.

The Bulls pulled even in the top of the ninth as Or and Ty Penner scored on a single from Gravel.

The Dawgs outhit the Bulls 12-10.

Gravel was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI and Or batted 2-for-5 with one run scored.

Demers was 2-for-4 and Mike Fitzsimmons hit 2-for-5.

Bulls reliever John Vulcano took the loss for Lethbridge, going one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one.

The Bulls head to Edmonton for a four-game series against the 10-7 Prospects that starts Friday and runs through Sunday.

Lethbridge is back home July 21 when they host the Okotoks Dawgs Black.
