Horns rugby duo hosting another clinic

By Dale Woodard on August 11, 2021.

Last month, Savanna Collison and Keegan Brantner invited local youth over to the Lethbridge Rugby Club to experience the finer points of the sport.

Now, the duo with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team who are also Youth Development Coordinators for the Junior Rugby Alberta Association have kicked it up a notch this Friday.

This time, they’re taking it over to the west side to the Pronghorns’ stomping grounds at the University of Lethbridge Stadium and teaming up with Rugby Alberta and the Lethbridge Sport Council for another camp for youths of varying – or no – experience.

“It’s going to be very similar to the one in July,” said Collison. “It’s a little bit extra with the Lethbridge Sport Council. They’re with us and supporting us and Rugby Alberta is bringing down a blowup field, which should be exciting.”

But the premise of the one-day rugby camp is the same as the one held almost a month ago.

“It’s the same aspect of getting the youth out, getting them into rugby and giving them an opportunity to experience the game,” said Collison, who will run the camp alongside Brantner and some volunteers. “Anyone who was at the last one is more than welcome to come out again, bring friends and just get people out and experiencing the game.”

Rugby Alberta’s blowup field features sidelines and uprights, but the playing field remains the same, said Collison.

“So the ground is still the grass, but it (field) has uprights.”

Friday’s camp runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., said Collison.

Youth 13-and-under will go from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., while athletes 14-and-older will play the last hour from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“No rugby experience is required. It’s just fun for all ages. It’s all free,” said Collison.

July’s rugby camp featured a host of younger athletes, one of whom just turned 14 and took part in both age groups.

“We’re always hoping for more, but anyone who shows up we are going to be happy regardless,” said Collison.

Those interested can simply show up prior to the start of the clinic.

“Just show up and be ready to have fun,” said Collison. “We’ll be ready to go as soon as people get there.”
