Carjacker awaits sentencing later this year

A man convicted in July of several charges, including kidnapping and assault with a weapon relating to a violent carjacking in 2019, won’t be sentenced for another three and a half months.
Cory Ray Williams, who stood trial in May, was found guilty July 29 on the two counts, as well as on charges of flight from police, dangerous driving, threats to cause death or bodily harm, robbery, housebreaking, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 29 in Lethbridge provincial court. Additional charges of attempted kidnapping, assault with a weapon, attempted robbery, and failing to comply with a probation order were dismissed by the judge.
On Oct. 20, 2019 Williams, whose face was masked, approached a car parked on the northside and held a machete to the driver’s throat. He eventually forced the driver to drive toward the Blood Reserve, but part way there Williams ordered the man to pull off on a side road. Williams kicked him out of the vehicle and sped away. The victim flagged down another vehicle for a ride as he walked along the highway, but Williams returned and began chasing that vehicle.
RCMP ultimately chased the carjacker to Fort Macleod where they later found the abandoned vehicle.
During a police investigation, Williams’ DNA was found on a baseball cap that was left on the ground where the victim was dropped off on the side of the road.
