City council has approved a permanent proclamation of an annual Sisters in Spirit Day each Oct. 4.
“In many ways this is housekeeping because on Jan. 12 as per the recommendations approved by council, one of the recommendations of the Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee is that we give ongoing support for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls through an annual Sisters in Spirit Day and make this a permanent declaration, and that is what is being requested today,” said Coun. Belinda Crowson, who sponsored the declaration motion during Tuesday’s council meeting.
Up until the passing of the permanent declaration, Sisters in Spirit Day, like other proclamations brought before council, had to be passed by the majority consent of council on a yearly basis. This is the first proclamation this council has enacted as an ongoing declaration, emphasizing the importance of the City’s reconciliation efforts and in solidarity with local missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited individuals.

How about cleaning up our streets first and then consider reconciliation!

The comment on this story by the anonymous commentator “pursuit driver” is incredibly goonish.

Reality is lost by many! The facts that came out of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls investigations found many things that pointed to the indigenous, but yet we all are the ones being blamed!
There is nothing goonish about the comment! If you want to make the biggest difference, begin in your homes in your communities, because that is where most of the issues began! I have talked to many indigenous on the streets of this city, and many of them were abused growing up in their indigenous communities by their own relatives!
I am tired of being blamed for all of your problems. You will never, ever be see victory in you fight to find peace and happiness until you quit blaming others for your plight!
I am tired of seeing your young people die in this city for no reason!
You really need to open your eyes! Society will not have reconciliation FORCED on us.
