Canes going to rookie camps

By Lethbridge Herald on September 4, 2021.

As they get ready to open their training camp next week, the Lethbridge Hurricanes are sending two of their players to NHL rookie camps.

On Friday, the Canes announced 2001-born defenseman Alex Cotton and 2003-born forward Ty Nash will attend NHL rookie camps with the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes, respectively.

Cotton, 20, was drafted by the Red Wings in the fifth round and 132nd overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft.

The product of Langley, B.C. has played in 146 regular season games with the Hurricanes in his WHL career, posting 29 goals and 104 points.

Cotton led all WHL blueliners in scoring during the 2019-20 season when he finished with 20 goals and 67 points in 63 games. In the shortened 2021 season he had seven goals and 26 points in 24 games.

The Red Wings camp will take place Sept. 16-20 with their annual Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan.

The tournament will include rookie rosters from the Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nash, 18, was originally a ninth-round draft pick – 183rd overall – by the Hurricanes in the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft but was undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft in 2021 during his first year of eligibility.

The native of Scottsdale, Arizona had four goals and 13 points in 24 games during the shortened 2021 season.

In two seasons in Lethbridge, Nash has 28 points (10 goals and 18 assists) in 83 games.

The Carolina prospects showcase will take place from Sept. 18-21 in Florida.

The showcase will include prospect teams for the Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators.

The Hurricanes open their training camp at the Enmax Centre Thursday with the annual Red vs. White Intra-squad game scheduled for Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.

Lethbridge will begin the preseason Sept. 17 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Canes will play four exhibition games, with both home games at the Enmax Centre.

Single game tickets for the 2021-22 regular season go on sale on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
