A volunteer was struck by a vehicle while preparing a water station for the Len Herring Legacy Ride, a charity event held Saturday by the YMCA of Lethbridge.
According to a release from the YMCA, the incident occurred at the corner of Riverstone Blvd. and University Drive.
Lethbridge police say the 60-year-old woman suffered serious life threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital in Calgary for further treatment.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the volunteer and their family. We will continue to offer our support to them as we learn more about what happened.” said CEO Jennifer Petracek-Kolb in a statement. “The YMCA community is close knit, and this terrible event has impacted us all.”
The YMCA says it is offering support to volunteers and staff who have been affected by the incident.
The Len Herring Legacy Ride is a family fundraising event for the YMCA of Lethbridge in partnership with the Herring family to honour the late YMCA supporters’ lifelong passion for cycling and the Lethbridge community.
