After a close season-opening loss, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team hits the road this weekend.
The Pronghorns are in Saskatoon today and Saturday to take on the Huskies in Canada West action.
Last Saturday in their home opener at the University of Lethbridge Stadium, the Pronghorns opened the season with a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars.
The Cougars were ranked second in the Canada West coaches’ poll and outside of the Cougars goal off a set piece, the Pronghorns played Mount Royal even for 90 minutes.
Now, the Horns set their sights on the Huskies today and tomorrow.
Two years ago, the Pronghorns tied the Huskies 1-1 in Lethbridge and lost 2-0 in Saskatoon. In their last ten Canada West games, the Pronghorns are 2-5-3 versus the Huskies.
Returning for the first time in two years, Pronghorns senior goalkeeper Nolan French made seven saves last weekend and kept his team within striking distance right until the final whistle.
Midfielder Alasdair Coyle had a team high shots on goal in the Pronghorns loss on Saturday.
Tonight is the Huskies home opener and they’ll be looking to build on a Canada West final four appearance in 2019.
In 2019, the Huskies finished second in the Prairie Division with a 7-3-4 record, but lost to the eventual Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds in the conference semifinal.
All-star Nikolas Baikas will lead the Huskie attack this season.
In 2019 Baikas scored three times to tie for the team lead in that department. He also led the team with five points and 48 shots on goal.
The Pronghorns will return home and host the Calgary Dinos Oct. 2 in the front half of a home-and-home series. The Dinos will host the Pronghorns on Oct. 3.
The Pronghorns and Huskies will hit the pitch in Saskatoon tonight at 5 p.m. and Saturday night at 7 p.m.
