The Lethbridge U18 Hurricanes kicked off the Alberta Elite Hockey League season on an undefeated note.
The Hurricanes downed the Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers 4-1 Saturday in Okotoks and skated to a 3-3 tie with the Airdrie CFR Bisons Sunday in Airdrie to start the season 1-0-1.
In the U15 division, the Lethbridge Val Matteotti Golden Hawks started with a pair of losses.
The Golden Hawks were downed 4-1 by the Medicine Hat SEAC Tigers Friday in Medicine Hat and 6-4 to the Calgary Flames (NWCAA) Sunday as the Flames scored three straight in the third to earn the win.
On Sunday in Airdrie, John VandenElzen scored in the first period for the U18 Hurricanes and Caden Heins and Ryan Henderson scored in the second. Henderson added an assist for a two-point night.
Canes goaltender Beck Boiteau stopped 24 of 27 shots in the tie.
On Saturday, Heins scored twice and Malachai North Peigan and VandenElzen added singles. Peyton Twigg chipped in with two assists for the Hurricanes.
Erick Roest kicked out 26 of 27 shots to earn the win.
The Canes remain on the road this weekend as they head to Calgary. They face the Calgary Buffaloes Saturday and the Calgary (NW) Flames Sunday.
The Hurricanes’ first home game is Oct. 16 against the Calgary Northstars at 4:15 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
For the Golden Hawks on Sunday in Calgary, Braxton Hanna scored twice and Sawyer Aquila and Hayden Iron Shirt added one each.
Jake Demone had two assists for Lethbridge and goaltender Seth Bird-Goodstriker made 30 saves.
Dominic Grieco was the lone Golden Hawks goal scorer Friday in Medicine Hat.
Brylin Noble stopped 30 of 33 shots.
The Golden Hawks host their first two home games of the season this weekend.
On Saturday, the Hawks take on the Calgary Northstars at 1:30 p.m. at the ATB East Arena and the Okotoks Oilers Sunday at noon, also at the ATB East Arena.
The Lethbridge Headwater U16 Hurricanes start their regular season this weekend.
The Canes are in Medicine Hat Friday night to take on the Tigers and return home Sunday as they host the Okotoks Oilers at 11:45 a.m. at the Logan Boulet Arena.
