Pronghorns grounded by the Thunderbirds

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team kicked off their west coast swing on a losing note Thursday.

The Horns were handed a lopsided 67-5 loss at the hands of the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West action in Vancouver in the battle for top spot in the Canada West.

The Thunderbirds rolled to a 36-5 lead at the half and tacked on another 31 points in the second half to earn the win that puts the Pronghorns at 3-2 on the season.

Gwen Fillinger hit for the Horns lone try, scoring in the 29th minute.

It was her team-leading fourth try of the season.

Savannah Baude scored three tries for UBC, while Mikiela Nelson, Florence Symonds and Shoshanah Seumanutafa added two each.

Florence Symonds, Piper Logan and Emma Feldinger scored one try each for the Thunderbirds who remain undefeated at 4-0 with one game remaining in the regular season.

The Pronghorns round out the regular season Sunday in Victoria when they face the Vikes (2-1) at 12:30 p.m., local time.
