Oil Kings blank Canes

By Lethbridge Herald on October 16, 2021.

For the second time in a little over a week, the Edmonton Oil Kings have downed the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Hosting the Canes in Western Hockey League play Friday night in Edmonton, the Oil Kings shut out Lethbridge 4-0.

Edmonton nursed a 1-0 lead into the midway point of the third before burying three in the final 8:54 and not even a 36-save performance by Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson – including two breakaway stops in the second period – was enough to get Lethbridge within striking distance.

Meanwhile, newest Oil Kings acquisition Luke Prokop – traded from the Calgary Hitmen earlier this week – scored twice.

With the loss, the Hurricanes are now 3-2-0-0, while the Oil Kings improve to 4-1-0-1.

The Hurricanes are one point back of the Red Deer Rebels (3-2-1-0) for second place and travel to Red Deer next Friday.

Prokop scored 4:14 into the first period for a 1-0 Edmonton lead.

Josh Williams scored on the power play 11:06 into the third and Dylan Guenther upped that lead to 3-0 with 2:33 left.

Prokop added his second of the game with 1:01 to go as Oil Kings net minder Sebastian Cossa kicked aside all 25 shots he faced. The Oil Kings outshot the Canes 40-25.

The Oil Kings were 1-for-5 on the man advantage and the Hurricanes were 0-for-5.

After next Friday’s game in Red Deer, the Hurricanes return to the Enmax Centre Oct. 23 when they host the Prince Albert Raiders at 7 p.m.
