Copperheads earn weekend split

The Coaldale Copperheads earned a high-scoring win on their way to a 1-1 weekend in Heritage Junior Hockey League play.

The Copperheads downed the Kainai Junior Braves 13-4 Friday night in Cardston, but were topped 5-3 by the Medicine Hat Cubs Saturday night at the Coaldale Sporstplex.

With the .500 weekend, the Copperheads are 3-4-1 and in third place in the Southern Division, two points behind the 4-3-1 Cubs.

On Saturday night in Coaldale, the Cubs scored three times in the second period to take a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Tyson Meier, Brogan Booth and James Halverson scored for the Copperheads.

Goaltender Ethan Barrows made 16 saves in the loss.

On Friday in Cardston, Coaldale rode an eight-goal second period to victory as Sean Burns, Braiden Burke, Jason Creighton and Kole Fujita each scored twice.

Brogan Booth, Tyson Meier, Ryden Rempel, Derrien Tonin and Koden Lazar scored once each for the Copperheads.

Burns, Creighton and Fujita each added an assist for a three-point night and Lazar, Rempel and Tonin each had two helpers for three points.

Booth had one assist for two points and Kale Amundrud added two assists.

In goal, Brendan Stewart had a 16-save performance for Coaldale to earn the win.

Stran Red Crow scored twice and had four points for the Junior Braves.

Easton Weasel Head and Hayden Weasel Head each had a goal and an assist.

Ethan Pickles made 43 saves for Kainai.

The Junior Braves are 3-8-0 on the season.

The Copperheads and Junior Braves are back at it in the rematch Friday night at 7 p.m. at the ATB Centre and complete their series Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
