Horns soccer players earn AOW

By Lethbridge Herald on October 20, 2021.

Soccer kicked up both the men’s and women’s Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week awards.

On the women’s side, Lucy Mundy took home this week’s honours, while Landon Veluw earned the nod for the men as both teams headed to Edmonton Saturday and Sunday to face the MacEwan Griffins in Canada West action.

Despite being shut out in back-to-back games with a pair of losses that drop them to 1-9, Mundy was a force on both sides of the ball, pacing the offence and then defending from her midfield position.

That was especially evident Sunday when the Pronghorns were down a player for the final 78 minutes.

Mundy, a product of Okotoks, is tied for the Horns lead in scoring with two goals and two assists.

The Pronghorns wrap up the Canada West season Saturday and Sunday at home, hosting the Mount Royal Cougars at noon at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

As the Pronghorns men rebounded from a 5-1 loss to the Griffins Saturday with a 2-2 draw Sunday that puts them at 0-7-2, Veluw had a hand in every goal.

On Saturday, he scored the lone goal in the loss to the Griffins and followed up that performance with a two-point effort the next day.

Trailing by a goal twice on Sunday, Veluw set up the first goal to tie the game and then scored the eventual game-tying goal in the 76th minute to help the Pronghorns to a 2-2 tie.

This season Veluw, a local player, is tied for the team lead in goals with two and points with three.

Veluw and the Pronghorns host the Cougars Saturday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. at the U of L Stadium in their final game of the season.
