Horns men split with the Dinos

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team was on the winning and losing side of a pair of one-point games as the Canada West season tipped off last weekend.

The Pronghorns women, however, started 0-2.

After opening the season with a 78-77 win over the Calgary Dinos Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the Pronghorns men’s team was unable to make it a sweep, falling 76-75 in the rematch Saturday to start the season 1-1.

Meanwhile, the Horns women were downed 75-67 Saturday night following an 81-53 setback Friday to head into the second weekend of the season looking for their first win.

In the men’s game Saturday night, Shae Gibb led the way with 15 points and Chad Oviatt added 12 as the Pronghorns came up just short.

Dinos Noah Wharton hit a trio of three-pointers in 90 seconds to keep the visitors on pace with the Pronghorns

With the Pronghorns up 74-73 Moreau Darlington drew a foul and sank one of his two shots to put Lethbridge up 75-73.

But a three-pointer from Calgary’s Aidan Smith stood up as the winning bucket and the second one-point difference in as many nights

Angelo Mbituyimana and Darlington added 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Horns.

Oviatt posted the double double with 11 rebounds.

Avery Hutcheson had three steals for Lethbridge.

The Pronghorns shot 34.8 per cent from the field, 32 per cent from the three-point line and 63.3 per cent on free throws.

In the women’s game, Savannah McMahon paced the Pronghorns with 20 points, but the Dinos opened up a 40-25 lead at the half.

The Pronghorns managed to close the gap a bit in the third outscoring Calgary 16-10, but the visitors pulled way in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home side 25-15.

Jessica Haenni and Haily Weaver also hit double digits for the Horns with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Dinos were led by Annacy Palmer, who had a 31-point outing.

Lethbridge was 33.9 per cent from the field, shot 31.8 per cent from beyond the arc and sank 81.8 per cent of their free throws.

The Pronghorns head to Edmonton this weekend to face the Golden Bears and Pandas and aren’t back at the 1st Choice Savings Centre until Dec. 3 and 4 when the MacEwan Griffins come to town.
