Horns rugby team falls short of Canada West bronze

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns rugby team fell just short of a Canada West bronze medal.

The Horns were downed 29-19 by the Calgary Dinos in the third-place game of the Canada West championship Sunday in Calgary.

The Dinos opened up a 24-0 lead at the half before the Pronghorns came charging back with three tries, but a rallying win came up short as the Dinos clinched the win and the bronze after the teams went 1-1 against each other in the regular season.

The Dinos started strong as Callandra Eagleton scored Calgary’s first try 8:10 in for a 5-0 lead.

Eagleton added another for a 10-0 lead before Taejah Thompson added two more tries for the Dinos for the cozy halftime lead.

The Horns answered back in the second half as Sara Cline scored Lethbridge’s first try that Abby Neudorf converted.

Calgary’s Julia Omokhuale padded the Dinos lead to 29-7, but the Pronghorns closed the gap once more late as Gwen Fillinger scored in the 72nd minute.

Ruby McRae added another try in the 80th minute.

A trio of Pronghorns were named to the Canada West All-Star team with Cline, Keegan Brantner and Abby Duguid landing spots.

Graduating veteran Karlee Durfey was named the Student-Athlete Community Service Award.

As the Pronghorns hosted the Dinos on Oct. 8, Durfey helped organize the Bo Smith Co. Childhood Cancer Awareness night, named after her three-year-old niece who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of two, with funds raised going to children and families affected by childhood cancer.
