The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns swim team gets one more tune up this weekend before the Canada West Championships later this month.
The Horns head to Vancouver to compete in the Odlum Brown College Cup, hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds, Saturday and Sunday.
The heats take place in the morning with the finals later in the day.
The event on the coast marks the third consecutive week of racing for the Pronghorns even though the entire team has already qualified for the Canada West Championships.
“The Colleges Cup will be our third competition in the past 15 days, which is a big ask for our student athletes, but they are excited to race at UBC this weekend,” said Pronghorn Head Coach Peter Schori is a release.
“The men are looking forward to defending their 4×50 free relay win from the last Colleges Cup in 2019, they are currently tied with University of Toronto for second in Canada in that event.”
The Pronghorns men have broken several school records, including the 4X50m freestyle relay last weekend in Calgary and are proving to be a force on the Canada West scene.
The Horns relay squad is also ranked fifth nationally in the 4X100 medley relay and eighth in the 4X100 freestyle relay.
First-year swimmer Apollo Hess has had an exceptional start to his official university career. After training last year when restrictions allowed for it, Hess has broken three Pronghorn school records this season.
He currently sits ranked in the top-10 nationally in six events, including first in the 50m breaststroke and 100m individual medley.
Third-year Pronghorn Chris Alexander has also cracked the national top -10, ranked seventh in the 50m backstroke.
The Pronghorns women don’t have any swimmers in the national top-10, but will look to build upon some top-10 results last weekend at the Dinos Cup.
Hunter Stewardson had the best finish by a Horn, finishing seventh in the 50m breaststroke, while Emilia Hesterman was eighth and Taryn Lachman ninth in the same event.
The meet will be streamed on the UBC YouTube channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh_8DGvdeFYu7WsLmz25DEQ
The Pronghorns will travel to Edmonton to compete in the Canada West
Championships, Nov. 26-28, hosted by the University of Alberta.
In other Canada West play this weekend, the Pronghorns men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road to Edmonton tonight and Saturday to take on the Pandas and Golden Bears.
Following a weekend split with the Calgary Dinos in season opening play last weekend as the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the 1-1 Pronghorns men will get an early-season test against the Golden Bears.
Last weekend, veteran guard and 2019-20 leading scorer Chad Oviatt posted double-doubles in both games and sits fourth in Canada West rebounding through two games, averaging 11 rebounds per game.
Horns newcomer Moreau Darlington had a solid debut with a game high 30 points. He is tied for seventh in Canada West scoring with 20 points per game.
Former Pronghorn Colton Gibb, who entered medical school at the University of Alberta will suit up for the Golden Bears this season.
On the women’s side, the Horns look to rebound after an 0-2 weekend against Calgary.
Last weekend, Pronghorns second-year guard Savannah McMahon had a strong opening weekend
offensively, leading the team in scoring both nights and setting a new Pronghorn career high in points in a game with 20 on Saturday night.
The women’s games go 6 p.m. tonight and Saturday at 5 p.m.
The men’s game hits the hardwood tonight at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.
