Broncos charge past the Hurricanes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes head into their road swing looking to shrug off a losing skid.

The Canes were downed 7-2 by the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League play Saturday night in Swift Current, kicking off the first of a five-game trek through Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes struck first on Joe Arntsen’s first goal of the season, but the Broncos rattled off four unanswered goals for a 4-1 lead by the 12:15 mark of the second period.

After the Canes briefly made it 4-2, the Broncos replied with three more, including former Hurricane Kayden Sadhra-Kang’s first career WHL goal with 1:10 to go to round out the scoring.

The loss puts the Hurricanes at 5-7-0-0.

Arntsen got things going Saturday night with his first of the year 5:42 into the game, but goals from Caleb Wyrostok and Mathew Ward handed Swift Current a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Ward added his second of the game 6:03 into the second for a 3-1 lead and the Broncos went up by three a little over six minutes later on a shorthanded goal from Raphael Pelletier.

Hurricanes co-captain Jett Jones cut that lead in half with his third of the season with 2:59 left in the second, but that two-goal deficit lasted 29 seconds as Josh Filmon netted his fifth of the season at the 17:30 mark of the period.

Rylan Gould and Sadhra-Kang rounded out the scoring in the third period for Swift Current.

Arntsen and Jones each had an assist for a two-point night.

Ward added a pair of helpers for a four-point night and Pelletier had two assists for three points.

Wyrostok, Gould and Filmon each had an assist for two points.

Hurricanes goaltender Jared Picklyk stopped 20 of 27 shots, while Reid Dyck made 21 saves to earn the win.

The Broncos outshot the Hurricanes 27-23.

Lethbridge was 1-for-2 on the power play. Swift Current was 0-for-1.

The Hurricanes’ road trip continues in Manitoba on Wednesday when they head to Winnipeg to take on the Ice before stopping in Brandon Thursday to face Lethbridge products Ridly Greig, Rylen Roersma and the Wheat Kings.

The Canes stop in Regina Saturday to face the Pats and wrap up the trip Sunday in Moose Jaw against the Warriors.

The final two games also have a Lethbridge angle with forward Zack Stringer playing his first year with the Pats, while Carl Tetachuk tends goal for the Warriors.

Stringer has six goals and nine points in 13 games with the Pats this season, while Tetachuk has accounted for all the Warriors wins this year with a 6-4-0-0 record, 3.11 goals against average and .902 save percentage.

The Hurricanes return home Nov. 19 when the Medicine Hat Tigers pay a visit to the Enmax Centre.

On Monday, the Hurricanes announced 2005-born forward Logan Wormald had been added to the main roster for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.

Wormald, 16, was drafted by the Canes in the third round and 45th overall in the 2020 WHL draft.

The Langley, B.C. product has appeared in four games with the Hurricanes as an affiliate player this season.

After being re-assigned at the start of the season, Wormald played in six games with the Yale Hockey Academy U18 club, scoring six goals and 11 points, good for third in team scoring.

The Hurricanes now have a 21-man roster, including 13 forwards, six defenseman and two goaltenders.

On Sunday, a deal was swung involving a Lethbridge native.

The Kelowna Rockets acquired New York Rangers prospect Talyn Boyko from the Tri-City Americans in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft and Lethbridge goaltender Cole Tisdale.

Boykowas selected by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Drumheller product was selected by the Americans in the third round of the 2017 WHL Draft and has a career 15-31-2-2 record in 56 games played, all with Tri-City.

Tisdale was selected by the Rockets in the eighth round of the 2017 WHL Draft. The five-foot-11, 170-pound netminder holds a 5-1-1-1 record, 3.14 goals-against average and a .888 save percentage through 12 career appearances with Kelowna.
