Canes teams grab three points

A last-second goal allowed the Lethbridge U18 Hurricanes to earn a three-point weekend, while the U16 Lethbridge Headwater Hurricanes enjoyed a winning end to a three-point weekend.

The U18 Canes put up a 1-0-1 showing in Alberta Elite Hockey League weekend play, battling the Airdrie CFR Bisons to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena after earning a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Maple Leaf (MLAC) Beverly Optimists Saturday, also at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The three point weekend improves the Hurricanes to 7-4-2, good for fourth place in the South Division, one point back of the Bisons and Calgary Buffaloes and five back of the 9-3-3 Calgary (NW) Flames.

Over at the Logan Boulet Arena, the Headwater Hurricanes lost 4-3 in overtime to the Okotoks Oilers Saturday afternoon, but doubled up the Calgary Northstars 6-3 Sunday to improve to 3-7-0.

On Sunday against the Bisons, U18 Lethbridge’s Ty Fraser scored his 14th goal of the season with 10 seconds left to knot the score at 2-2 and force overtime.

Ryan Henderson scored in the first period for the Hurricanes as Airdrie led 2-1 after the second period.

Fraser is now tied for the league lead in goals with Airdrie’s Cooper Brown, who scored in the first period for the Bisons.

Erick Roest made 22 saves in the tie.

On Saturday, Henderson, Grady Martin and Fraser scored in the first period for a 3-0 lead and Caden Heins added another in the third to round out the scoring.

Fraser added two assists for a three-point afternoon and Heins an Henderson added one helper each for a two-point game.

Roest stopped 29 of 30 shots.

The Hurricanes continue their six-game homestand this weekend as they host the Calgary Royals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The Canes are back at Nicholas Sheran Sunday when the Buffaloes pay a visit at noon.

The Headwater Hurricanes earned their third win of the season thanks to a three-goal first period as Nathan Hawkins, Aidyn Law and Deegan Kinniburgh scored in the opening 20 minutes.

Rhyle Weaselhead, Adrien Fox and Ty Christie added their first goals of the season to seal the win for Lethbridge.

Kinniburgh and Christie added one assist each for two points and Oakley Hill and Connor Chapman had two assists each.

Harrison DeJong made 32 saves in the win.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes managed to take a point off of Okotoks, but Oilers Ryan Williamson scored in overtime to give the visitors the second point.

Carter Cunningham, Law and Kinniburgh scored for Lethbridge as the Hurricanes scored twice in the third period to force overtime.

Kinniburgh added an assist for a two-point afternoon and goaltender Kahil Wright stopped 29 of 33 shots.

The Hurricanes have the coming weekend off from league play, but return to the Logan Boulet Arena Nov. 28 when the Medicine Hat South East (SEAC) Tigers come to town at 11:45 a.m.

In South Central Alberta Hockey League play, the Lethbridge U18 Hockey Hounds were 1-1 following a 6-3 loss to the Calgary NWCAA Bruins Saturday and a 6-5 win over the Calgary CNHA Gold Sunday.

On Sunday, Zac Rajcic, Garrett Carlson, Sheldon Sawyer, Jayden Spence, Zane Rajcic and Cooper McAulay scored for Lethbridge.

Zac Rajcic and Carlson each added an assist for the Hockey Hounds, while Griffin McCulloch added three helpers.

Nixon Ordway made 18 saves and Ryan Dekok stopped all three shots he faced.

McCulloch, Drew Constant and Zac Rajcic scored for Lethbridge in Saturday’s loss to the Bruins.

Dekok stopped 36 of 42 shots and Ordway made four saves.

The Hockey Hounds are in Taber to take on the Golden Suns Saturday at 8 p.m. and are in Okotoks Sunday to face the Oilers at 3:30 p.m.
