The Alberta Schools Athletic Association high school volleyball provincials fired up Thursday at locations across the province.
At the 4A boys and girls championships in Red Deer, the Catholic Central Cougars are off to a 2-0 start after a 2-0 (26-24, 25-20) win over Grande Prairie Charles Spencer and a 2-1 (25-20, 15-25, 15-12) victory over Red Deer Lindsay Thurber.
The Cougars kick action off today at 9:30 a.m. against Calgary Bowness and wrap up the round-robin against Edmonton Strathcona at 3:30 p.m.
On the boys side, the Chinook Coyotes are off to an 0-2 start after losing 2-1 (22-25, 25-23, 15-17 to Edmonton Jasper Place and 2-0 (23-25, 15-25).
The Coyotes take on Grande Prairie Charles Spencer today at 9:30 a.m. and Calgary Aberhart at 3:30 p.m.
The 3A boys and girls provincials are taking place in Westlock with the Magrath Zeniths representing the South on the boys side.
The Zeniths are 1-1 after the opening day. Magrath defeated St Martin de Poirres 2-0 (25-19, 25-11), but fell 2-0 (24-26, 17-25) to Barrhead.
The Zeniths resume play today at 11 a.m. when they square off against Camrose and return to the court at 5 p.m. when they face the host Westlock R.F. Staples.
Medicine Hat Monsignor McCoy is representing the South on the girls side and are 1-1 to start the championship.
At the 2A boys championship in Cold Lake, Coaldale Kate Andrews and Pincher Creek Matthew Halton are 0-2 to start.
Coaldale lost 2-1 to OLMP (25-22, 23-25, 12-15) and 2-0 to La Crete (26-24, 25-19).
Matthew Halton was defeated 2-0 (25-11, 25-20) by Assumption Jr Sr High and Calgary Christian (25-20, 25-12).
Coaldale returns to action today at 9 a.m. against Edmonton Christian and again at 3 p.m. against JR Robson.
Matthew Halton begins the day against Holy Redeemer at 1 p.m. and plays Strathcona-Tweedsmuir at 5 p.m.
In Taber at the 2A girls championship, the Magrath Pandas are off to a 2-0 start after a 2-0 win (25-14, 25-15) over Sexsmith Secondary and a 2-0 win over the host Taber St. Mary’s Auroras (25-13, 25-16).
Earlier in the day, St. Mary’s lost 2-1 (16-25, 25-17, 10-15) to Edmonton Christian.
The South wildcard Vauxhall Queens started the weekend 1-1 on opening day.
The Queens lost 2-0 (20-25, 23-25) to Calgary Christian, but rebounded with a 2-0 win (25-8, 25-14) over Prairie Christian Academy.
The Pandas continue today at 1 p.m. against Edmonton Christian and 5 p.m. against Notre Dame.
St. Mary’s takes on Notre Dame at 11 a.m. and Sexsmith Secondary at 3 p.m.
Vauxhall faces Onoway at 1 p.m. and Rimbey at 5 p.m.
At the 1A boys provincials in Peace River, Picture Butte is 1-1, while Pincher Creek St. Michaels is 0-2.
Picture Butte edged Paul Rowe 2-1 (25-14, 14-25, 15-10), but lost 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) to Olds Koinonia School.
Pincher Creek lost 2-0 to Central Alberta Christian (25-9, 25-13) and Edmonton Parkland Immanuel (25-20, 25-19).
Picture Butte kicks off action today at noon against Living Waters and at 3 p.m. against New Norway.
Pincher Creek faces HŽritage at 1 p.m. and E.H. Walter at 5 p.m.
Lacombe is the site of the 1A girls provincials and South representatives Picture Butte is 0-2 after opening day.
Picture Butte lost 2-0 to Edmonton Parkland Immanuel (21-25, 21-25) and 2-1 (20-25, 25-13, 13-15) to Morrin.
The South representatives start today against ƒcole Des Beaux Lacs at 11 a.m. and CACHS at 5 p.m.
