Horns women top MRU, men swept in weekend basketball action

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team earned their first two wins of the Canada West season as they head into their final homestand before the Christmas break.
The Horns headed to Calgary Friday and Saturday, where they grabbed a pair of wins over the Mount Royal University Cougars.
Lethbridge won 65-56 Friday night and followed that up with a 74-48 decision Saturday to complete the sweep and move to 2-4 on the season.
The Pronghorns men were swept by the Cougars to fall to 1-5 this season, losing 83-78 Friday and 82-67 Saturday.
In the women’s game Saturday, the Horns got off to a 27-13 lead after the first quarter and 38-24 cushion at the half en route to the win.
Haily Weaver led the way with the double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Haenni chipped in with 11 points.
The Horns shot 36.2 per cent from the field, 33.3 from the three-point line and 60.9 per cent on foul shots.
In Friday night’s nine-point win, Haenni paced the Pronghorns with 21 points and Weaver had her first of two double doubles on the weekend with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Isabel Rattai and Savannah McMahon each had three steals as the Pronghorns were 34.9 per cent from the field, 20.7 per cent from three-point range and 78.9 per cent on free throws.
In the men’s game Saturday night, the teams kept it close in the first quarter with the Cougars up 19-12, but the hosts pulled away in the second quarter to take a 42-27 lead at the half.
De’Andrae Pierre led the Pronghorns with 17 points, while Angelo Mbituyimana added 15 points off the bench.
Jeff Rodehutskors earned the double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Moreau Darlington chipped in with 11 points in the loss as the Pronghorns shot 35.5 per cent from the field, 23.3 per cent at the three-point line and 40 per cent from the foul line.
In Friday night’s loss, the Horns led 35-34 at the half, but the Mount Royal outscored Lethbridge 29-21 in the third quarter to set up a close fourth quarter.
Down six points heading into the final quarter, the Pronghorns took a 76-75 lead with a little over a minute to play, but a 4-0 run in 12 seconds earned the Cougars the lead and the five-point victory.
Pierre drained 16 points for Lethbridge, Rodehutskors and Mbituyimana added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rodehutskors added 12 rebounds for the double double.
The Pronghorns shot 38.6 per cent from the field, 22.2 per cent from beyond the arc and 53.3 per cent on free throws.
The Horns wrap up the first half of the Canada West season Friday and Saturday when they host the MacEwan Griffins at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
Game time Friday night is 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
The women begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with the men following at 7 p.m.
