COOK, Peter Raymond

1955-2022

It is with sadness the family of Peter Raymond Cook announce his passing on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the age of 66. Peter is predeceased by his parents Ray and Iris Cook of Lethbridge; brother Calvin Cook; and sister Linda. He is survived by his wife Janice Cook; son Peter (crystal) Cook; Daughter Sherry Cook (Dave Caldwell); nine grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; three brothers and five sisters. A Celebration of Peter’s Life will be held at a later date at the Serbian Club, Regina, SK.

CURLY RIDER

MARILYN JOYCE CURLY RIDER passed away on January 26, 2022 at the age of 42 years.

Albert Vernon Dorge

1929 – 2022

Mr. Albert Vernon Dorge of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Doris Dorge, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, January 24, 2022 at the age of 92 years.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Doris; children Vernon, Debbie, Jamie and Jaelynn, as well as numerous family members and friends.

A Viewing will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, January 31, 2022 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Please note that due to Covid 19 restrictions the number of attendees will be limited to 50 people in the building at a time. Thank you for understanding.

Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at the UNION CEMETERY, Fort Macleod, Alberta.

GEORGE ROY GORZITZA

August 15, 1932 – January 24, 2022

George died at 89 at the Good Samaritan Park Meadows Village after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Lethbridge and grew up on the family farm near Kipp, Alberta. He was the youngest child of Emil and Elise (nee Reimann) Gorzitza. He is predeceased by his parents and his 3 sisters and 6 brothers.

George joined the Cadets during the war hoping to follow his 4 older brothers into service but the war ended before he was old enough to enlist. In 1952 George attended SAIT in Calgary to study electronics returning to Lethbridge after graduation for work where he met the love of his life Anna (nee Stenger) at the Lethbridge curling rink where Anna was working and George went to play. They married in 1957 and had 3 children.

George worked in the field of electronics all his life starting with putting radios in cars for Enerson Motors, then repairing radios and record players at Leister’s Music before joining Taylor, Pearson & Carson which later became Canadian Electronics Ltd. In 1981 he started Titan Wholesale with his partner Albert Sauer from which he retired in 1997.

In retirement George enjoyed new hobbies and pursued new interests including the steel guitar, golf and camping in their 5th wheel. He avidly collected old music, scouring the internet for all the old country songs. Right up to the last year of his life George could be found bicycling around the area out to Hardieville in all kinds of weather.

Friendly and outgoing George made many friends and enjoyed keeping in touch with numerous acquaintances. He will be remembered for his generous and kind nature and his good sense of humour.

George is survived by Anna, his loving wife of 64 years, his 3 children, Carol (Dwayne) Graham of Lethbridge, Sherrie (Ian) Morrison of Vancouver and Brad Gorzitza of Calgary. He also leaves to mourn his 3 grandchildren, Carl and Dana Morrison of Vancouver and Stephanie (Jeff) Eliot of Coaldale and his great-grandson Caleb Eliot. He is survived by his sister-in-law Laura Gorzitza of Vulcan and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

There will be no service. Cremation followed by scattering of ashes at a future date.

Mrs. Andrea Habijanac of Coaldale, beloved wife of the late Mr. Rudy Habijanac, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at the age of 97 years.

LaVerne Hisako Hamabata

This is a tribute to my wife of 45 years, LaVerne Hisako Hamabata, my life partner. She was born May 13, 1941 in Lethbridge, AB and passed away on January 28, 2022.

She expressed her gratitude to those whose paths she crossed for making these “80 marvelous years”. She loved all kinds of music, movement especially dance, nature and children. LaVerne was fiercely loyal and defended her family against any criticism. She filled our home with love and compassion and our years together gave us many happy moments in Lethbridge and on our travels including a year in France. Together we worked on making our home a warm place to raise our family.

LaVerne was Administrative Assistant to the Plant Science Section at the Research Station for 23 years and then became a full-time mother and wife, much to the delight of her family. We want to thank the Bigelow Fowler staff, EMS paramedics, ER staff, the Home Care nurses, Palliative Care and MAID teams who cared for LaVerne in her final months battling cancer. Thanks to Terry and Josh of the Nord-Bridge Medicine Shoppe for their patience and help with LaVerne’s medicines. The care and friendship of dear friends made the final journey less arduous.

LaVerne is survived by her loving husband, David Major, son Ian (Raeni) and daughter Noriko Hessmann (Sean) and three much-loved grand- children, Aiko, Anouck and Cypris. The sun rose and set on her grand- children although she didn’t see them as often as she would have liked. She is also survived by her siblings, Happy Smith, Nadine Hamabata, Duane Hamabata, Louise (Jim) Harrison, brother-in-law Joe Prins and Lindsay (Cindy) Hamabata and their children and by sisters-in-law Frances (Al) Paulisson, Elspeth (Peter) King, and Queade (Bruno) DiIlio and their children. LaVerne was predeceased by her parents, Kamasuke and Chiduka Hamabata, her dear sister Cheryl Prins, brother-in-law, Murray Smith, and by parents-in-law Helen and David Major Sr.

She asked me to thank her dear friends, April and her family, Iris and Wes and family, and Marlene, for their deep and enduring friendship and support over the years. She treasured the times growing up and growing old with the members of the Coaldale and Honpa Buddhist Churches and the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta for their unfaltering friendship, humour and love. Special mention also to a mangy little kitten who showed up one day and then spent the rest of his life filling the hole left when our two kids went off to find their place in this world. My life partner spent her life living as a Bodhi Sattva, a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings. She knew that peace comes from within, do not seek it without.

At LaVerne’s request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of Koden or flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the BC & Alberta Guide Dogs Society or to the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta.

Sister Caroline Lahey

Lahey, Sister Caroline, formerly Sister Leo Joseph, 88, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Mary’s Court, Parkland Antigonish, on Sunday, January 23, 2022, in the 64th year of her Religious Life.

Born in Main-A-Dieu, Nova Scotia, Sister Caroline was the daughter of Leo and Annie (Perry) Lahey.

Sister Caroline entered the Sisters of St. Martha on February 15, 1956. She pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1958, and her perpetual vows on August 15, 1961. She began her ministry in our pioneering mission of homemaking. She lived and worked in several places in which the Congregation was present. In Nova Scotia she lived and served at Bethany, Antigonish; St. Martha’s Convent, at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish; New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, New Waterford, CB; Star of the Sea, Canso; RK MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish; St. Andrew’s Convent, St. Andrew’s; St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish; Marian Community, Antigonish; Mary’s Court, Antigonish. In Western Canada she lived and ministered in St Peter’s Hospital, Melville Saskatchewan; St. Monica Convent, Lethbridge Alberta; Covenant Community, Lethbridge, Alberta. She also lived and ministered at St. John’s Hospital, Lowell, Massachusetts.

Sr. Caroline lived the charism of Gospel Hospitality throughout her life, particularly in the ministries of pastoral visiting and pastoral care. During her time in Lethbridge, as well as at the RK MacDonald in Antigonish, New Waterford Hospital, and St. Martha’s Hospital she ministered in Pastoral Care. She visited many people in the communities in which she lived, offering the ministry of presence. Her compassionate presence, ready smile, and infectious laugh were gifts to many who were experiencing health or other challenges. She always had little Irish ditty at the ready.

Besides her parents, Sister Caroline was predeceased by brother James and sisters Shirley and Marie. She is survived by brothers Ernest, and Joseph, and sisters Florence, Shelia, and Angela.

A private Celebration of Vigil was held followed by a private Liturgy of Christian Burial on, Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Martha Chapel. Arrangements were under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home of Antigonish.

Ron Lloyd
1936 – 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Ron Lloyd announce the passing of their dad and grandpa, Ron Lloyd. He was a fighter until the very end, losing his battle to cancer and a stroke on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at the age of 85 years.

Ron was born in Magrath on June 22, 1936, the oldest of three children born to Maurice and Ethel Lloyd. He spent most of his life in Taber. Ron was predeceased by his lovely wife and best friend of forty eight years, Lorna Lloyd (nee Turnbull).  Together they raised three children Ron Lloyd (Louise), Teri Hansen (Darwyn) and Sharla Capner. Ron worked many years for the Taber Irrigation District, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed curling, camping, happy hour, golfing and spending time in Arizona or Indian Hills depending on the season. Through these activities he met and made many wonderful friends.
His lasting legacy will be his beautiful family. Ron’s most treasured roll was as grandpa. He leaves behind seven very loved grandchildren, Blair (Carlee) and Brad Hansen; Ronnie and Andrew Lloyd; Jared (Tanessa), Brooke and Taylor Capner (Cam Derry). He was especially blessed with five great grandchildren, Nixon and Emma Hansen and Holden, Macrae and Payce Capner.
Ron was exceptionally fortunate to spend his last years with Louise McCloy whose friendship and love was deeply cherished. During the pandemic, Ron looked forward to Tuesday night card night and Louise’s daughter Joanne was instrumental in making this happen, for which we are very grateful.
Ron was also predeceased by his parents Maurice and Ethel Lloyd, sister Joan Gross, brother Richard Lloyd, Lorna’s parents Jim and Dora Turnbull and brother-in-law, Donald Turnbull.
Ron will be greatly missed by all that were so privileged to know him as he was loved by all.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Ron’s name may be made directly to the purchase of a bench that will be placed at the Indian Hill Golf Course at one of the holes he scored a ‘hole in one’ at. Mr. LeRoy (Lee) Mapplebeck of Lethbridge, passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the age of 83 years.

He is survived by his soulmate, best friend and beloved wife, Sharon (Mosher) and son David.

Charles Pickles

1949 – 2022

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Charles Wilfred (Fred) Pickles, beloved husband of the late Sandra Wyllie Pickles. A dad, uncle, grandpa and best friend, who passed away courageously on January 26, 2022 at the age of 72 years.

Fred loved his family so dearly and nothing gave him more pride than his three grandkids. He was a true gentleman, respected everyone equally and would give to anyone in need.

He will forever be remembered for his genuine character, his Mr fix-it abilities, his quirky sense of humour, his love of vintage cars and his passion for trains.

Charles will be lovingly remembered by his son Gordon (Taunya), his daughter Laurel (Steve), grandkids Jenna, Ethan and Kayden as well as Jenna and Ethan’s mom Tammy (Martin) as well as extended family.

He was pre-deceased by the love of his life Sandy Pickles, his parents Eveline and James Pickles and his brother James (Reg) Pickles.

Our family wishes to extend enormous gratitude to St. Mikes Palliative Care Unit, as well as Chinook Regional Hospital Day Procedure Unit staff (His Girls). We would also like to thank the many physicians including Dr. J. Geers, Dr. B. Weston, Dr. D. Walsh and the extended health care staff who were a part of dads comfort care.

Sydney Arthur Thurlow was born September 17, 1962 in Lethbridge. He passed away at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary November 12, 2021 of cancer. He attended school in Picture Butte.

WUTH

Beatrice Kathleen Wuth, beloved wife of the late Fritz Wuth, passed away in Pincher Creek on January 24, 2022. Born July 10, 1928 at Bentley, Alberta, she leaves behind her loving sons Farley and Brett of Pincher Creek, as well as sister-in-law O’dell Stephenson and many nephews and nieces of whom she was very fond and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Amalie Stephenson, and her siblings Alice Ellsworth, Robert Stephenson, Irene Anderson, Bertha Stephenson, Violet Read, and Roy Stephenson.

Next to her family, Beatrice’s delight was in nature and with them she enjoyed many years of skiing and hiking in the mountains. Her pleasure was in painting landscapes and trees on location which she did in all kinds of weather. Besides painting locally, she painted across Europe, the East and West Coasts, Mexico and the N.W.T. She worked in radio at CKRD Red Deer, CJIB Vernon and CFOC Saskatoon before her marriage and later sold stories to the CBC and the BBC.

Beatrice enjoyed travelling widely in early years with her family and later with her husband. Before returning to Pincher Creek to be near her sons, she lived in Ontario, Saskatchewan, B.C., Pincher Creek, Denmark and Lethbridge.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
