It took a pair of very close decisions and one late comeback, but the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team’s winning streak has hit double digits.
The Horns scored a 2-0 sweep over the Calgary Dinos in Canada West play Friday and Saturday night in Calgary.
They downed the Dinos 70-67 Friday night – their first win over the Dinos since 2010 – and then pulled out another close 71-70 win Saturday to move their winning streak to 10 games and improve to 10-4.
The Horns men also enjoyed a 2-0 weekend that pulled them to 6-6 thanks to 85-81 and 85-65 wins over the Dinos Friday and Saturday, respectively.
On Saturday, the Pronghorns women had to play some comeback ball to earn the sweep, rallying in the last four minutes to erase a nine-point deficit and post the one-point win.
Trailing 68-59, Pronghorns guard Jessica Haenni hit a three-pointer to start a 12-2 run to close the game and at least clinch second in the Central Division.
Haenni finished with 21 points, while Millay Johnson and Danielle Nadeau each added 11.
Haily Weaver had seven rebounds and four assists. Johnson also had four assists.
The Horns are now tied with the Alberta Pandas – this weekend’s opponents – for top spot in the Central Division with 10 wins each, although the Pandas have two games in hand.
In the men’s game Saturday night, De’Andrae Pierre paced the Pronghorns with 19 points and Jeff Rodehutskors and Moreau Darlington each added 14.
Rodehutskors also had eight rebounds.
The Pronghorns shot 46.9 per cent from the field, 41.7 per cent from the three point line and 62.5 per cent on free throws.
On Friday, Angelo Mbituyimana and Rodehutskors topped the 20-point mark with 24 and 22, respectively.
Shae Gibb added 15 points and Chad Oviatt had 10 points and 16 rebounds for the double double.
The Horns were exactly 50 per cent from the field, 43.8 per cent from beyond the arc and 69.6 per cent from the foul line.
The Pronghorns now host the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Friday and Saturday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
Game time Friday is 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
