U18 Hurricanes blank the Northstars in Calgary

The Lethbridge U18 Hurricanes managed to wrap up a two-game road swing on a winning note and a shutout for a three-point weekend.

The Canes blanked the Calgary Northstars 3-0 in Alberta Elite Hockey League play Sunday afternoon

That came one day after a 3-2 loss to the Okotoks Oilers Saturday afternoon in Okotoks that puts the Hurricanes at 19-12-5 with two more road games to go this weekend to wrap up the regular season.

On Sunday, Canes goaltender Erick Roest turned aside all 20 shots he faced to post the win an the shutout, while Nolan Fomradas – with his first of the season – John VandenElzen and Blake Matheson scored for Lethbridge.

Matheson added an assist for two points, while Roest collected his third shutout of the season, good for second in the AEHL. His 1.70 goals-against average is also second-best in the league.

On Saturday in Okotoks, the second point eluded the Canes as Oilers Gavin Schmidt scored 4:24 into overtime to give the hosts the win.

Kade Duell and Grady Martin scored for the Hurricanes in the second period as Lethbridge led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Duell added an assist for a two point game and VandenElzen chipped in with a pair of helpers.

Hurricanes goaltender Beck Boiteau was kept busy with 43 saves.

The Canes complete their regular season weekend when they head to Calgary to face the Royals Saturday and the Buffaloes Sunday.

The 25-10-1 Buffaloes are one points ahead of the Calgary (NW) Flames (23-9-4) for first place in the South.

The Lethbridge U16 Headwater Hurricanes were defeated 5-2 by the Medicine Hat SEAC Tigers in their only game of the weekend Friday night in Medicine Hat.

The loss puts the Canes at 15-13-0, good for fifth in the South and four points back of the Tigers.

The Hurricanes got power play goals from Nathan Hawkins and Connor Chapman in the second period for a 2-1 lead, but four unanswered Tigers goals – including three in the third period – paced Medicine Hat to the win,

Kahil Wright stopped 27 of 31 shots in the loss.

The Hurricanes are in Calgary Saturday to face the Bulls (CBHA) and are in Okotoks Sunday to take on the Oilers.

Lethbridge is back home Feb. 26 when the Red Deer North Stars pay a visit to the Logan Boulet Arena at 3 p.m.

The Lethbridge U15 Val Matteotti Golden Hawks also had only one game last weekend, losing 8-3 to the South Division-leading Airdrie Xtreme Sunday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The loss puts the Golden Hawks at 5-25-0.

The Hawks opened up a 3-1 lead 9:30 into the second period on goals by Cassius Day Chief and man advantage markers from Owen Stewart and Kayson Christian, but the Xtreme rallied back with three goals in the final 10:09 of the second for a 4-3 lead heading into the second intermission.

Airdrie added four more in the third to seal the win.

Christian added two assists for three points, while goaltender Seth Bird-Goodstriker stopped 32 of 40 shots.

The Golden Hawks continue a busy, eight-game February this weekend with a pair of home games.

They host the Calgary Flames (NWCAA) Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and the Calgary Bisons (CBHA) at noon. Both games are at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The Lethbridge Eagles earned a pair of decisive home win in Alberta Junior Female Hockey League play last weekend.

The Eagles blanked the Calgary Jags 8-0 Saturday afternoon and then followed that up with a 9-1 decision over the Central Alberta Amazons in a two-game homestand at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The wins improve the Eagles to 20-8-1 to keep them in second place in the AJFHL South Division.

On Saturday, Hayley Whelen made 18 saves for the win and the shutout as the Eagles scored five third period goals to clinch the win.

Brooklyn Boychuk led the Eagles with the hat trick and an assist for a four-point afternoon and Kyra Greig added two goals.

Kianna Dietz, Tenelle Lind and Juliana Gulayets added singles for Lethbridge.

Dietz and Lind added two assists each for three points, while Gulayets had an assists for two points.

Skylar Colonna and Brooklyn Palmer each had three assists.

Colonna led the Eagles in Sunday’s win with a six-point outing on one goal and five assists. Eryn Johanson had two goals and two assists for a four-point game.

Gulayets had two goals and Eva DeBaie, Lind, Mackenzie Leroux and Jamie Harris added the other Lethbridge goals.

DeBaie put up two assists for three points and Lind added one helper for two points,

Greig put up three assists in the win.

In goal, Abigail Mucha made 15 saves.

The Eagles are back home Saturday when the Calgary Titans pay a visit to Nicholas Sheran Arena at 4:15 p.m.

Lethbridge then heads to Calgary Sunday to complete a home-and-home with the Titans at 1:15 p.m.

In South Central Alberta Hockey League play last weekend, the Lethbridge U18AA Hockey Hounds won a pair of games at Henderson Arena.

The Hockey Hounds edged the Taber Golden Suns 6-5 Friday and followed that up with an 8-5 win over the Calgary CNHA Black Saturday to up their record to ().

On Sunday, the Hounds scored three goals in the first and second periods and added two more in the third to earn the win as Drew Constant led the way with a hat trick and Zac Rajcic added two goals and two assists for a four-point game.

Affiliated player Alex Westlund, Ashton Angle and Griffin McCulloch added singles for the Hockey Hounds.

Westlund and Angle added one assist each for two points and Cooper Miller and Garrett Carlson each chipped in with two helpers.

Nixon Ordway made 33 saves in the win.

The Hurricanes opened up a 3-0 lead Friday night before the Golden Suns answered back with three of their own to knot it at 3-3.

Lethbridge scored two more 5:16 into the third for a 5-3 lead.

With the Hockey Hounds up 6-4, Taber pulled within one on a goal from Rylan Millo with 5:41 to go, but were unable to net the equalizer.

Zac Rajcic, Sheldon Sawyer, Angle, Braeden Jack, Constant and Zane Rajcic scored for Lethbridge.

Zac Rajcic added two assists for three points and Sawyer, Angle and Jack put up one assist each for two points.

McCulloch and Jordan Campbell each posted two assists.

For the Golden Suns, Brinley Degenstein scored three goals and Ryan Holm added the other Taber marker.

Josh Plumer added two assists for the Golden Suns.

Ryan Dekok put in a 33-save performance for the Hockey Hounds, while Golden Suns netminder Landon Porteous turned aside 36 of 42 shots.

The Hockey Hounds return to action Saturday when the travel to Medicine Hat to face the Hounds at 8 p.m.

Lethbridge is back home Feb. 25 when they host the Foothills Bisons at 7 p.m. at Henderson Arena.
