Big games on tap for all Kodiaks teams this weekend

Playoff seedings are on the line as the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams finish their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular seasons this weekend.

On the track, the Kodiaks indoor track team also returns to action for their second Grand Prix event of the season.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team is at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium Saturday night at 6 p.m. when they host the SAIT Trojans, while the Kodiaks women’s team wraps up the regular season in Caronport, Sask. when they take on the Briercrest Clippers tonight and Saturday.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball will also wrap up regular season play this weekend when they head to Ambrose tonight, followed by a game at SAIT on Saturday.

The Kodiaks need one win to secure second place in the ACAC South Division.

In the men’s volleyball game Saturday, the winner of the match will claim third place in the ACAC South Division in the battle between the 9-6 teams.

Saturday will mark the regular season finale for both the Kodiaks and Trojans.

The Kodiaks will also honour two graduating players prior to the game.

Nolan Moes sits second in the conference with .74 aces per set, while libero Malcolm Fisher is currently third in the conference with 120 digs.

In women’s volleyball, the 8-6 Kodiaks face the 8-4 Clippers tonight at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. in a battle for second place in the ACAC South.

The Kodiaks need to win both games to leapfrog Briercrest and grab second place, which comes with a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The Clippers defeated Lethbridge 3-0 last Thursday at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

Jamie Brown is in third in the ACAC with 3.62 kills per set.

Setter Johanna Dixon is averaging 7.82 assists per set, fifth most in the conference.

In women’s basketball, the 10-4 Kodiaks clash with the 3-10 Lions tonight at 6 p.m. and tangle with the Trojans Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Kodiaks will look to bounce back after their third straight heartbreaking loss, as a late comeback fell just short in a 67-64 defeat at Briercrest last Saturday.

The Kodiaks can no longer catch the St. Mary’s Lightning for first in the ACAC South, but can clinch second place with a single victory this weekend.

Kodiaks rookie Courtney Deemter is just two points behind Medicine Hat College’s Katelyn Rozdeba for the overall ACAC scoring lead.

Matlin Jacobs was named a Kodiaks January athlete of the month.

In men’s basketball, a potential first place matchup with SAIT looms on Saturday as the 11-2 Kodiaks face the 12-2 Trojans.

The Kodiaks can clinch first place in the ACAC South if they win their final three games.

They have one regular season makeup game against Briercrest to play next week.

Veteran guard Orin Porter Jr. leads the offence, averaging 18 points per game.

Chris Schlauwitz has been strong on both sides of the ball and is tied for the team lead in steals with 18.

The Kodiaks indoor track returns to action at the ACAC Grand Prix #2 Saturday in Red Deer.

The Kodiaks men’s team is coming off a third-place performance in the first ACAC Grand Prix event in January, while the women will look to build on a fifth-place finish.

The team is building towards the ACAC Indoor Track Championships on March 26-27.

Maria Boix-Frias was named a Kodiaks Athlete of the Week after finishing second in the 600m event at last weekend’s Panda Open.

Logan Danyluk (first year, Massage Therapy, Lethbridge) also impressed, finishing third in last weekend’s 600m event.

Fans are permitted to attend the Kodiaks home game this weekend.

Restrictions remain in place, including limited capacity and a masking policy.

Food and drink will be allowed inside the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

No proof of vaccination is required for attendees.
