Pats get past Hurricanes in wild third period in Canes return home

The Regina Pats came into the Enmax Centre and snagged a 6-4 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

It was the Hurricanes first home game in 19 days.

“I thought we played real hard,” said Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio.

“I think our guys battled. I think, unfortunately, there was some tough breaks on some goals that we would like to have back — but that’s the way the game’s played. Our goalies have been good for us all year long and tonight I think the goaltender was probably a little bit of a difference in the game. We haven’t said that very often this year.”

The Canes got off on the right foot in the game as defenceman Nolan Bentham scored is fourth of the season from Yegor Klavdiev and Brayden Edwards 4:21 of the first period.

The home side would take the first penalty of the game as Lethbridge’s Briley Wood was sent off for charging at 16:04 of the opening frame.

Connor Bedard would notch his 39th of the year on the powerplay at 17:08.

Bedard took a cross-checking penalty at 4:09 of the second and the Hurricanes capitalized, as Klavdiev scored seven seconds later to give the home team a 2-1 lead.

Bedard notched his second goal of the night and 40th of the year at 13:34 of the second.

The Pats would pull ahead as Logan Nijhoff scored at 15:33 of the middle frame.

Justin Hall evened the game at 3-3 at 7:23 of the third and he would find the back of the net again at 7:50 to pull the Hurricanes ahead 4-3.

The lead was short lived as the Pats would answer with a goal of their own at 10:10 as Neithan Salame scored third of the season.

Layton Feist would put the visitors up by one as he scored make it 5-4 for Regina at 14:22 of the third.

The Pats would put the game out of reach at 15:17 of the third period as Cole Dubinsky made it 6-4.

“It was a disappointing loss because I think, you know, we’re pretty happy with how we played overall,” said Hall.

“There was a few mistakes there that (we’ve) got to clean up.”

The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 24-28-3-1 and hanging on to seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

As for the Pats, they move to 23-27-3-2 and one point back of the Hurricanes with 51 points.

Shots were 32-24 in favour of Lethbridge.

Both teams went 1-for-2 on the powerplay.

The Hurricanes will begin a home-and-home with the Red Deer Rebels at the Enmax Centre on Friday night at 7 p.m.
