It was the Lethbridge Hurricanes who took the second last installment of this season’s Highway 3 rivalry with a 6-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night at the Enmax Centre.

It was the Tigers who got the early 1-0 lead at 6:48 of the first period as Rhett Parsons blasted his fifth of the season past Canes goaltender Jared Picklyk.

Drawing the assists were Brayden Boehm and Logan Barlage.

“I thought we were playing hard in the first period,” said Brent Kisio, Hurricanes head coach.

“We had a lot of shots and  a lot of attempts  on net — their goalie was good — and they got couple of bounces and scored some goals on us, but I was proud of our group and how we stuck with it and didn’t get away from our structure. The plan didn’t change, we just had to stay with it and keep shooting pucks on net and we get rewarded at the end.”

The Hurricanes set a record with shots in a single period with 23 but could not solve the Tigers’ Beckett Langkow.

There were barely any skate marks on the ice to start the second before the Tigers made the game 2-0 at 35 seconds on a goal by Brayden Boehm.

The hometown Hurricanes were able to get on the board a minute later as Tyson Laventure scored his 10th of the season from Jett Jones and Yegor Klavdiev.

Lethbridge’s Alex Thacker scored his 11th of the season at 9:08 of the middle frame to nod the score at 2. Chase Pauls and Justin Hall  had the  assists on the goal.

Brayden Edwards put the Hurricanes in front 3-2 at 13:50.

Thacker scored his second of the night on the powerplay at 15:51 to double the Hurricanes lead to 4-2.

Hayden Smith  would make it 5-2 Canes at 5:24 of the final frame.

Josh Van Mulligan brought the Tigers to within his second at 13:36.

Kade Nolan would respond for the Hurricanes at 14:51 to make the score 6-3.

Thacker spoke about the team’s win after the game and being the first star after a two-goal night.

“I feel like we came into the game knowing that we lost to Swift Current and needed points going ahead for the playoff push here and this was  a  massive win,” said Thacker.

Thacker said, “It was awesome” on the two-goal output.

Shots were 47-29 for Lethbridge.

Both teams will play again tonight in Medicine Hat at 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes record is now at 28-30-3-1, which is good enough for 60 points and seventh place.

The Hurricanes next home game will be Wednesday against the Saskatoon Blades at 7 p.m.
