Kodiaks athletics welcomes multiple athletes to campus for next season

Lethbridge College Kodiaks teams were busy signing recruits this week

The men’s volleyball program kicked the week off  with their highly coveted signing of Gavin Moes on Monday.

Moes is joining the program from the volleyball hotbed  of Barrhead and will be the third  member of the Moes family to join the program after his brothers Dylan and Nolan.

The younger Moes will be lining up along side Nolan next season. Dylan played in 2019-20.

“Getting the opportunity to stand next to my brother for a national anthem and compete for a championship is a dream come true,” says Gavin. “Nolan had the opportunity to play with Dylan and watching their relationship grow closer was something I always wanted to experience.”

Moes is a 6’7” dynamic attacker and has a spike of 11’5.

He won’t be totally unfamiliar with the roster as fellow Barrhead Composite alumni Cameron Piers will be on the roster.

“Not only am I excited to play with my brother but also my former teammate Cameron, and potentially having three athletes from Barrhead on the floor together,” says Moes. “The motivation to win in Lethbridge and with my brother has never been higher and I believe in this group to push me to become the best version of myself.”

Moes’ leadership qualities on top of his court talents is what caught on the eye of head coach Greg Gibos.

“He’s an extremely talented volleyball player, but an even better leader. What stands out for me was watching him compete with his high school team and celebrating successes at every turn,” says Gibos. “I distinctly remember watching him pick up teammates when they were struggling and being the first person to celebrate their accomplishments. He’s going to make every single person in this program better. He’s a special talent and I believe one day he has the potential to represent our national team. It’s a monumental day for our program.”

Moes has already created a list of accolades for himself including be named MVP of the illustrious GANZA Volleyball Showcase at the University of Alberta— which brought together the best volleyball players in western Canada— and he also won MVP at the Beyond the Game Showcase, which highlighted the top U18 club teams in the province 

Meanwhile, the women’s soccer program added goalkeeper Brooke Krowchuk as a part of their 2022 recruiting class.

Krowchuk is a Calgary product that played as a part of the Cochrane Minor Soccer program.

For Krowchuk, the LC commitment covered off the two dreams of playing post-secondary soccer and following in her parents’ footsteps of pursuing her career as a police officer.

“I’m just so excited to play post-secondary soccer,” says Krowchuk. “It’s crazy because I never thought that I would be able to get to this level, so I’m super excited for that. Plus I’ve wanted to be a police officer since the dawn of time, so going into the Criminal Justice Policing program is super exciting as I will get to follow my parent’s paths, she said.

Her strengths include being able to read the game at a high level and moving the ball effectively.

“I’m confident at reading plays and I also take pride in working on my angles and distribution,” she said.

“I’m extremely excited to add Brooke to our program,” says hean coach Sean Carey. “I really like Brooke’s all-around game in goal and I really believe she will grow into a huge player in this league. She is such a confident goalie as well as person, which is so important at this level. Now it’s just working on some of the fundamentals and Brooke will be an important part of the Kodiaks for years to come.”

The men’s basketball program signed on 6’7” guard Declan Peterson this week.

During the recruiting process, Peterson says he was impressed by the Kodiaks culture and is excited to join a strong, competitive program.

“It means a lot that the Kodiaks coaching staff trust in me to come in and perform and compete at a high level,” says Peterson. “It’s great to be welcomed into a strong program with a group of guys who strive to be better on and off the court.”

“Declan brings size and rim protection to our program. He’s also a gym rat with a willingness to get better,” says head coach Ryan Heggie. “He showed very well at our ID camp last month with his aggressive play. He has a very high ceiling and we are excited about him being here.”
