Lethbridge College students and employees teamed up for a round of disc golf Thursday as part of the new Chain-Shaker, Scholarship-Maker fundraising event.

Teams of eight competed to raise funds that will go toward the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences (CBAS) scholarships, following the legacy left behind by the Biker Buddied fundraising, which began in 2017 and involved teams of cyclists on stationary pedal bikes.

“We knew this year that we were participating in a disc golf tournament, so nine holes, nine teams and the goal is $9,000 today,” said Marda Schindeler, Associate Dean of CBAS at Lethbridge College.

Lethbridge College CBAS Dean Kevin Smith said it is important to have scholarships available to students in any economic climate, but especially in the current climate.

“In the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences we have the most students in the college, we have about 1200 to 1500 students a year in all of our programs and we also do service teaching for all the other programs or most other programs in the college,” said Smith.

He said it is important for them to raise awareness about having as much money available as possible for scholarships for students in the CBAS program.

“This is the first time we are able to do something like this both for the centre and for the students, so the new disc golf provides a new challenge for us to actually do that,” said Smith.

He said after a hard but motivating semester, both faculty and students needed a break and this was a great opportunity to do so, while doing it for a good cause.

Events and communications manager of the Lethbridge College Students Association Tanner Marcer said disc golf is like regular golf but with a disc.

“We are playing best disk, so we can get everyone to participate and have a good time here and raise some money for students,” said Marcer.

He said the term ‘best disk’ is used to determine where the team will position themselves after they tee off, by using the disc that lands closest to the basket.

Participating teams were divided into two groups, with one round of disc golf beginning at 11 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m.

One of the teams had representatives from the book store and Emily Campbell, bookstore manager, said they always try to support initiatives that help students, since they know how expensive books can be.

“We try to do what we can for students to show our support in any way for their post-secondary success,” said Campbell.

She said she is not very familiar with disc golf, but it was a great opportunity to bring college staff from different areas together for a great cause and to take advantage of the golf course the LCSA provided the college with.

Marcer said the idea of creating a disc golf course originated in 2019, because there is a pretty good disc golf community in Lethbridge and the LCSA thought it would be great to bring it to campus.

“When the pandemic hit, we needed to bring students on campus for safe activities and we thought it was a perfect opportunity and we were able to put in the course in September 2021 and it has been very well received,” said Marcer.

He said the course has nine holes for now but they are hoping to expand it to 18 holes in the future.

Marcer is encouraging members of the general public to use the disc golf course at the college any time.

“On the weekends the college parking is free and people can park any time on 28 Avenue or Tudor area and walk over,” said Marcer.

Tournament and fundraising results will be available on Monday.

It was an essential step for me, therefore I resorted dissertation help . This aided in the preparation and effective presentation of an excellent work.
