West Wind Gymnastics Club ends year as hosts of Alberta Compulsory meet

West Wind Gymnastics Club saw seven participants compete in the Alberta Compulsory Championships provincial meet  in their home gym over the weekend.

“And all of them did really well,” said  Katrina Brandt, Women’s Artistic head coach for West Wind.

“We walked away with some medals, some ribbons. But I think overall they were really proud with their performances. So that’s really good, especially because we have a really large young team that’s kind of up and coming. So, lots of those athletes were able to watch them and I think that really motivated the next generation of athletes to work hard and see the success of their team members.”

West Wind gymnasts, Hayden Magierowski, was competing in her first provincials in the  Level 4  category and scored a 9.7/10 to become a provincial vault champion and will have a banner hanging in their facility.

Magierowski thought she had a pretty good weekend.

“I’m most proud of my vault because I’m pretty sure I got a pretty good score,” she said prior to the awards.

“And I’m proud of my Floor as well doing better at tumbling.”

She said, “I was really nervous at first because I didn’t think I was going to place at all.”

Magierowski did a lot of routines to help calm the nerves.

“She’s a real good vaulter,” said Brandt.

“So that’s why I didn’t want like say in front of her as I was like watching the last couple of scores come in … I know that she’ll be really excited, we make a big deal out of it in our club when kids become a provincial champion at events and they get a banner that’s hung up in our facility. So it’s really special for the kids if they place at the top.”

Brandt said usually at competitions she does place high on vault.

“I know that she has the confidence that she had a good performance and in the past that kind of performance resulted in a medal, but I didn’t want to ruin the first -place surprise before the awards.”

Brandt thought provincials was nerve-wracking for a lot of the athletes because being in your home gym means there are a lot more family members and friends in attendance.

“That adds a little bit more nerves to them because there (like), ‘Oh my gosh, my friends from school are watching, my grandma and grandpa are watching,’” said Brandt.

“…But then being able to compete on their home equipment, in their own gym — they know the lighting, they know where the beam location is, what it feels like. I think that puts them at a little bit of an advantage once they settle into those nerves.”

There were around 280 competitors and about 20 clubs from all over the province who convened on the city for the championship.

Level 3

Olivia Hatten-Fifth bars, fifth in beam and eight overall

Zara Hurley- seventh in bars and  fourth in beam

Charlie Kress 7 uneven bars

Ryann Pulsifer- ninth in vault 

Roan Brouwer- eighth in vault, fifth in uneven bars, third in beam, third in floor and third overall

Level 4

Hayden Magierowski- first in vault, second in bars, eight in beam, sixth in floor and fourth  overall

Level 5

Ayla Bac-  second in vault, second bars, seventh in floor and seventh overall
